They bought a British brewery and SHIPPED IT OVER!!!
Seriously though, I feel sorry for anyone who didn't get the chance to taste Taeddonggang beer when it was available. It's a remarkable beer; clean mouth-feel, a little sweet, nicely hopped.
Why the hell can't OB, Cass, or Hite make one single decent damned beer? |

On the plus side - the beer here is so bad that for the first time in 14 years I have stopped drinking. And I have lived in many countries. |

Yes, I enjoyed it too!! It was pretty good....best Korean beer by FAR!!! It's really too bad that it's not around anymore. Not sure if it's true or not, but some bar owner in Suji told me that floods last year destroyed the brewery. Meaning no more beer for us. |

I used to think American beer was generally not something I would want to drink. However, America has more of a selection, and you can find a good beer in your state. Korean beer reminds me of some of the cheap American beer we sometimes drank in college to just experiment or if the deal looked so great that we couldn't pass it up. I wouldn't mind paying 3,500 won if the beer would just taste better. I mean they could produce a better local beer if they want. At least, it tastes better than soju.
We can definitely say that Kim Jung Il and some of his friends seem to be big fans of quality drink. |

It still is available isn't it? I'm sure someone I was with this weekend ordered a bottle. |

I took a coworker to Wabar solely so he could try Taedonggang and was disappointed they don't have it anymore. It is a quite impressive beer, and helps me to rank South Korea as the worst beer-maker in Asia. Something about Taedonggang reminds me of grass clippings, and I mean this in a good way.
Somewhere online I read that until a couple years ago, North Korea actually had more microbreweries than South Korea. Granted, South Korea only had one until very recently. |

That is so odd that North Korea would be into good brew while the rich affluent South has a taste for the world's worst brew. |

My theory, and I could be wrong, is that they don't use hops, so it's really just malt liquor. Is that wrong? |

One of the reasons I think 'So-Mek' (a shot of soju in your beer) is so popular here is becuase the beer alone tastes like pish. It certainly livens up the boring taste of OB, Cass et al.
I drank Taedonggang in Geckos last year and thorougly enjoyed it. It's a shame that it's gone. |

Right and wrong. South Korean beer doesn't use hops, but that has nothing to do with malt liquor.
Malt liquor is simply beer with a high alcohol content. |

Koreans probably like their beer. I mean many Europeans think American beer isn't so good. Canadian beer falls sort of in the middle between European beer and American beer. It's more common to find a European style beer brewed domestically in Canada, but many Americans don't care about that and will drink their Coor's Light, and I think Coor's tastes like bad water. It's light, because it has so much water content in it. Korean beer reminds me of bad American beer i.e. some of the worst American beer. The difference is that "bad American beer" is mainstream beer in Korea. |

Interesting aside, apparently the company thought they were shipping to South Korea and were suprised when a bunch of norks showed up.
Also at the top of one of Pyongyang's department stores is a mircobrewery's for foreigners and top military and KWP brass. |

Look at where all these countries got their beer influence from. Japan and China both learnt everything they know about beer from the Germans. The North Koreans, apparently England. The South Koreans? The US.
And I'm not saying that American beer is all crap; from what I've heard they have a ton of microbreweries. But their mainstream beer is the worst, and that's the model Korean beers use. In fact, Budweiser is considered a domestic here.
To most Koreans probably the idea of microbreweries makes no sense. The best must be the most popular, because it is the most profitable. |
