Hello everyone,

I'm going to visit a friend of mine in Hong Kong, and I was just wondering about the money thing.

Is it better to exchange money here in Korea, or when I get to Hong Kong?

Is it possible to take money out of my Korean bank account (KB Star) while in Hong Kong, or should I roll up a pile of 10,000 won bills and hide them in shoes?

----------------------------

Also, any advice on what my friend and I should see while in Hong Kong?

She was thinking of the Peak, Big Buddha (via cable cars), ...Disneyland or Ocean Park ---- I don't know what most of those are . . . I never pictured myself going to Hong Kong.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Never take korean money to any country and expect a good rate. Exchange it here.

DO NOT TAKE WON OUT OF KOREA.

Buy either $US or HK$ here at the airport.

You can carry a lot of cash in a small space if they are $US100 notes.

HK is pretty easy to get around in. Buses and bus routes are English. Most of the best places to see are either on a bus route, subway line or within walking distance of most hotels.

There is a tourist info booth as you walk out the glass door of the secured area at HK airport. Make use of it. They usually have great tourist packs with maps, advertising and attraction info, etc.

You might want to add one of the night or street markets on your list of things to do. Temple street, jade market, etc. You might want to cruise through the jewelry shops on the golden mile in Kowloon too. Gold and diamonds are pretty well priced there.

If you like big cities, Hong Kong is great. There's a couple great nightlife areas, Lan Kwai Fong and and SoHo. The Peak is good of course, it makes a nice day hike and has a great view. You should also check out the south side of Hong Kong Island, Stanley and Shek O have some half decent beaches and seaside walks. Just walking around the city is pretty cool for me. And the food is amazing too. I'd be in Hong Kong if I weren't in Korea.

What screws up HK is the accommodation situation there.

Accommodation costs as much as the airfare if not more.

Sure there are plenty of hotels, but they are prohibitively expensive for anyone on a teachers salary and it is rare tog et value for money.

Hostels there are also typically of a low quality in difficult to find "shared" buildings.

It may be more affordable to stay on the mainland or even Macau and ferry across to HK for day trips.

Nice place if you have cash to burn.

Stay on Llamma island as it is not that expensive for a guesthouse there. It's cheap to travel between there and central on a boat.

Do they have anything like yeogwons there? Just a basic room for US$20-30 a night?
