Remember those Lakota who declared independence last year? Pretty smart cookies!
People of Lakota Launch Private Bank for Only Silver and Gold Currencies
Hill City, Lakota - November 24, 2008 - In a stunning development, the Free & Independent People of Lakota announced today the introduction of the world's first non-reserve, non-fractional bank that accepts only silver and gold currencies for deposit.
"Today is a great day for us, a day that we begin to exercise our rights as a sovereign people with strength and pride," comments Canupa Gluha Mani, Tetuwan Council Judicial Member of the Cante Tenza "Strong Heart" Warrior Society. Mani's 2500 member warrior society has contracted to provide private security services for the Free Lakota Bank.
"We invite people of any creed, faith or heritage to unite in an effort to reclaim control of wealth. It is our hope that other tribal nations and American citizens recognize the importance of silver and gold as currency and decide to mirror our system of honest trade." Mani, also known as Duane Martin Sr, is a member of the delegation that declared Lakota independence on December 17th, 2007.
The launch of the Free Lakota Bank is also an incredible victory for StrikeForce Technologies, the access control experts providing depositor Out-of-Band Authentication. As the Free Lakota Bank does not require a name, photo identification or social security number to transact, StrikeForce's technology met the challenge of limiting fraud without requiring controversial biometric technology.
The People of Lakota invite depositors to establish accounts and invest in the Free Lakota Bank's General Investment Fund, the fund it uses to develop profitable free-market enterprise inside Lakota territory. Mani comments that the nation despises donations and charity, and instead insists instead on "earning our wealth by creating value for those that place their faith and trust in our system."
The Free Lakota Bank issues an American Open Currency Standard Approved currency, making it readily accepted for trade by over 10,000 merchants and businesses across the continent.

While I think white society has treated the Indians abominably, I don't think turning the US into a Swiss Cheese-looking map is the answer.I think their best hope is to get title to the wind farms on the Great Plains is a better solution. Then they can play Arab shiek to the governors of the states to their east. |

Native Americans used the status of their homelands as separate nations that are exempt from many US Federal and State laws to establish casinos across America. This was good for the members of the tribes and good for America. It gave us more freedom. It helped to reduce the power of the government and gave people the option to gamble their own money.
All laws against drugs, prostitution and gambling need to be repealed, and this was a start. Ironically, the Indian tribes turned out to be better money managers than the US government.
Now comes this new attempt to creat a bank based on real money. This would be a another great contribution to the freedom of the people of America and eventually, the whole world. What the world needs now is a 100% gold backed currency. If they are allowed to do this, it will pave the way to honest money, end inflation, end recessions, give people a safe store of value and real money for the first time since 1913 and displace the world's socialist fiat currencies.
It is most likely that the Federal Government will try to find a way to swoop down and stop this. If any nation or group, anywhere on Earth can start a gold backed currency, (as I have explained on other threads), and especially now during this socialist, fiat money financial collapse, the gold backed currency will be stable and maintain its value and people will run to this bank for safety. This would ultimately lead to the final collapse of the US dollar and all other fiat currencies on Earth. |

It won't last. This is a direct challenge to the Fed's monopoly. |

This isn't actually an original idea. E-gold has been going for several years. http://www.e-gold.com/ |

E-gold is not a bank, but merely a way to own gold.
Free Lakota Bank actually makes loans and charges interest, as well as keeping your money in gold and silver for you. |

It is an excellent idea. The Fed needs competition. |

How is gold "real money"? The value of gold is based on a single idea. It's pretty. It has certain industrial applications but it's value is mostly based on an agreement that it is valuable. Geez.
I wonder how important gold is to your daily life, as opposed to say wheat or iron. |

Paper money has less historical precedent than gold for being a means of exchange.
Paper money has value because the government asserts so. Gold has value because those who think gold has value assert so.
It really isn't a hard concept.
So, the best outcome is the one that I've always advocated for. Private, asset based (metals) currencies that compete with the Fed for the trust of the population. |

The point is no money is "real". All money, including gold, is backed by a perception of its worth. |

OK, so then you ought not mind giving me all your "phony" money then.
My point was, as Mises so astutely noted, that gold has more historical precedent as "money," and hence is more "real" than anything else, certainly more real than fiat paper. |

Did Mises say asset backed currencies were more real than fiat currencies? I missed that.
What I thought he meant was that there should be no fiat currency monopoly. |
