I would like to have a month at least to travel a little once my contract is up next year. There is just no possible way of backpacking with all the gear I have with me in Seoul. I'm just wondering what you would do with all your stuff, things that can't be mailed home like an Xbox, laptop etc. Even mailing home jackets and stuff like that would be pricey.
So if you have done it, did you find some sort of storage facility and then just base your travelling around needing to get back to Seoul at the end of it? Also is it likely that your employer would be able to book your ticket home for a month or so after your contract finished?

Mailing back to canada wasn't expensve at all. A big ass box packed with shoes and clothes cost me 44,000won by surface mail. Some things I couldn't mail are coming wth me but I'll be leaving it at a friend of a friend's place in Bangkok (since i'll be in and out of bangkok the most).

Ditto what thiopine said. I did this 10 years ago when I went on a 6 month backpack trip. What I didn't ship back home I left with a friend and picked it up when I came back to Korea to get a plane back home. Also had a good month to boot around Korea before I left, something I didn't have time to do when I was working here.

I think most bosses won't mind booking a ticket for later. Depending on the time, it might even end up being cheaper for them. The ticket is not connected to your visa. When you do come back, you will be on a tourist visa, however.
