Before I came to Korea I used to cook a lot. It just naturally happened, a side effect of living in a roomy apartment with a roommate. Baking, big roast dinners, lasagnas, etc. But I've never seen a contract that says an oven will be supplied as part of my kitchen itinerary, yet these Korean employers will often offer you a rice cooker..

So I'm looking to buy a small oven, big enough to roast medium sized chickens maybe. Any idea on the price range, or what's good and what's not? I'm not going to spend a fortune nor am I going to be cheap and pay as little as possible for something I'll definitely use a lot.

Thanks in advance

I have a convection oven like this:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51uLdSDkAnL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

Cost me about $70. Works well enough but it isn't really big. Hard to do casseroles and such.

You can also get something like this:

It'll run you about double.

Real ovens still aren't common in Korea or most of East Asia. Some people have them, but they're certainly not standard.

My Rinnai is the ubiquitous American model with the salamander on the floor instead of above the oven. Cost 400k. For a picture, grab the Homeplus flyer from the outside of your apartment door and look Razz

My girlfriend bought something similar to this a few weeks back in Yongsan for about 90,000 won and can accommodate two trays as well.

ovens are more common in korea than many realize. just not in officetels and the older places that hagwons and schools tend to place their foreign teachers. most apartments (i mean the regular ones in the big-ass apartment blocks) do come with ovens these days.

I remember looking on some korean shopping sites last year when I was thinking about coming to korea and found that you could buy them online (with a friends help of course) for around 300,000W and I believe they run on LPG.
They were similar in size to your general apartment oven size in US/Canada

Go on www.naver.com

Cllick "shopping". (get your co-teacher to point out the "shopping tab" if you can't find it.

Do a search for "oven" (yes, in English)

Look for the Hammilton Beach that has two racks. They advertise it as being able to bake 2-- 12 inch pizzas.

It's about 260,000 won, is shipped in a few days, REQUIRES A TRANSFORMER TO ADJUST TO 120 VOLTS. (I paid 30,000 won for the transformer in a small town)

It works quite well, though I put aluminum foil on the inside of the glass door to shorting the baking time.

The Rinnai and Schott American style oven ran 750,000 at Emart. No, even in large family sized newer apartments ovens are not standard. Most people who have one buy it themself.

Sad Me either, or I would snap that up.

I've had a knock-off brand similar to that HB people mentioned for a couple of years. I got it in Yongsan for around 100,000w. It still does the trick. I use it all of the time for many things.

Haha... well my apartment came with an oven, but no rice cooker! And I'm looking to buy a rice cooker! Funny how things work.... anyway, my oven is (not so conveniently for me) labeled in Korean so I haven't been able to decipher how to make toast yet.... but roasting chicken! You're giving me ideas!!! Maybe I'll try that after I successfully make toast.

I'd suggest a toaster for you, jeni

To everyone else, thank you very much. I think I'll try offering on the oven Smile

I've seen some badass apartments (my korean dongsang's house) that go for something like 1,300,000,000 won for a three room place that had ovens.. so the good apts must have em

Really, the ovens here don't have "broil"? It has the tubes on the top that look like a broiler. Lame. Sad I don't want to buy a toaster.

I bought a used oven a couple of months ago. Full size floor model. 70,000. The seller called the manufacturer and ordered new knobs.
The best part was when they installed it and I opened it up. The oven and salamander had NEVER BEEN USED. All the paperwork and the plastic laminated directions were still unopened, and the pan, rack and rotisserie spit with handle were unused. The previous owner had only used the four burners on top. Amazing. We have rotisserie chicken or pork once or twice a week and I bake on the weekends for the week.
