Can anyone recommend some good day trips out of Seoul? I thought it was about time I started exploring the areas around Seoul over the next few weekends. I have only made it down to Suwon to walk the wall fortress.
I'm interested in anything, other cities/towns, countryside, hiking, the coast, just anything you have enjoyed and can recommend really.

thanks

Namisum (남이섬) http://www.namisum.com/
ㄴ would be a decent place to go with a missus

Wolmido (월미도) http://www.incheon.go.kr/inpia/servlet/html?pgm_id=INPIA000682
ㄴ a nice little island near incheon. ferries, little shops, small amusement parks.. also a nice dating sort of place

Gangchon (강촌)
ㄴ the station itself is nice, its near the top of a cliff of some sort. then there are small waterfalls nearby and you can rent a bike and go riding around.

the three are places you'd want to take a girlfriend, or places your girlfriend would take you if you didn't know about them

some other things would be central park in bundang, horseracing near gwacheon, the kintex or the lake park in ilsan, chinatown in incheon, etc

I recommend Gimcheon. I went there in September for a wedding. It was about 1.30 hours on the fast train, 3 hours on the slow train.
Not a big place, but they have a pretty famous temple there called Jik-ji. I believe I saw there was bus service from the train station to the temple (its about 15 minutes) but one of my friends had a car that day.

Some good restaurants near the temple and you can easily spend just 2 hours walking around the temple and the park outside of it.

Suwon: Hwaseong fortress - a UNESCO world heritage site. Very nice dat trip.

Suwon folk village

Jaebudo - South of Ansan. An island connected to the main land via a road on the ocean floor. The tides here are noticably very big. Korea has the second biggest tides in the world and Jaebu gives you a reasonable view of it. You can walk out on the mud flats until you get to the waters edge then have a shrimp bbq at a restaurant on the coast. Not bad.

Ski trips out to Gangwando - or to closer resort here in Gyeonggi (Phoenix Park in Gangwon or Jisan in Gyeonggi)

Rafting on the Hantang river. Very pretty river.

Dobongsan - North Seoul, great mountain, great hike, great place

Bungee Jumping - Sorry I can't remember the name of the area, but it's nice.

Hiking on many of the mountians surrounding Seoul - Surisan (Gunpo south of Anyang) is pretty mellow and nice. The mountain next to Seongnam (I always forget the name). There is a fort around the top of the mountain, a temple, a great view of the sun setting over Seoul and some great restaurants.

if you get up early you can even hit Beopjosa at Songni mountain or go visit the lake next to Chungju. I actually like Chungju, mellow little town.

You might also check out the Seoul International Hiking Club and Royal Asiatic Society. I've enjoyed excursions with both of them.

you can bring a turkey out to Gangwondo and bake it in my oven. While you could make this a day trip if going by car, you could do it in 1.2 days using the buses or trains. LOL We also have a few ski resorts within 1 hour drive.

Inje is a fun place to go for a weekend. Bungie jumping, river rafting and other adventure sport type activities.

Chuncheon There's a big dam and a lake and if you take the ferry across you can hike to a temple sort of thing. Have dinner at Dakgalbi street. If you really want to impress there is a mime festival there every year!

Dukjeok Island or one of the other islands off Incheon.

I second Chuncheon. Worth the trip for the chicken galbi alone.

Munsan has some awesome big eel restaurants, but you'll need a Korean with a car.

Samcheok (삼척) in Gangwondo, maybe 4 hour bus ride from Seoul. There is a famous cave, HwanSeon Gul (환선굴) about 40 minutes from SamCheok, easily accessible by bus. From Samcheok, you can also check out Sinnam (신남) and the *beep* park.... Shocked

Samchoek is really nice, especially when the weather gets warmer. You can take a local bus from the station to the place where the *beep* sculpture park and fishing museum are and on the ride back to Samcheok the bus will stop buy some amazing beaches that don't get too crowded and are good for a picnic. The tourist information booth at the train station always had an English speaker who was very helpful with getting around and helping us find good restaurants.

Gangcheon and Chuncheon which were both suggested are very close together so you could easily spend a few hours in one town and take a taxi to the other.
