Does anyone have any fast, 10-minute or so activities on the theme of Thanksgiving? It just so happens that the unit in the book I'm currently working through at my girls MS (1st grade) has a few dialogues on Korean holidays etc so I thought I'd try and work in a few Thanksgiving ideas.

Show em' a picture of a roast turkey and ask, "what is this?" They'll yell out, "Chicken!" You say, "No, it's Thanksgiving turkey that is 8 to 10 kilograms and goes goble goble goble." And then show a picture of a wild American turkey with its red and blue head, black and white wings, and brown tail feathers upright.

Tell them Thanksgiving is similar to Chuseok holiday where we take off work and school to get togethor with relatives like mom, dad, brother, sister, neice, nephew, and grand parents for a eating a big feast, talking, playing cards or board games, and watching sports on TV. Then show a picture of a big Thanksgiving spread laid out on a table. You get, "Woooh!" and they're impressed by the site of such a meal as they don't ever see anything like this. Ask, "Does this look delicious?" They'll say, "Yes!"

Ask, "When is this big Thanksgiving Day dinner?" You'll get blank stares and then you say, "It's today!, but unfortunately, we can't do this this year, but I thought I'd share a little about what I would be doing if I were home today and what most Americans are doing today."

You can even introduce separate Thanksgiving foods like pumpkin pie and get them to agree that it looks very delicious, but none will have ever seen or eatin it since for some odd reason, there's no cans of pumpkin nor do bakeries make pies. There are pumpkin pies at Costco, Korea's only source of such a delicious dessert. Some students claimed to have ate cherry pie, but I'm not sure where or how they got it as I've never seen a pie in Korea.

Show them pictures of what people do on Thanksgiving:
-Turkey
-Football
-Macy's parade (I found pictures of a Hello Kitty balloon and Pikachu balloon and they loved it)
-Pumpkin Pie
-Cranberry sauce (even showed them a picture of people harvesting cranberries in a flooded bog and they were in awe)

Pictures are great. Then you can ask them questions (what is this large bird again? What is a parade? What's this reddish sauce made out of? etc. Tailor to their level of English)

Class, you are all turkeys, and Thanksgiving is here. I want to choose a nice turkey for my dinner.

Work in pairs, and write sentences on why you would be a bad choice for dinner, but your partner would be a good one.

E.g., I am small and sick; my partner is fat and delicious, etc.

It's worked well for me this week.
