|
|
It seems like marrying a Korean female is the thing to do when in country? I see a lot of questions pertaining to getting married etc. Are these marriages being taken seriously or is it just a sport? Please let me know. Also, How is the dating scene. I have been researching this question prior to arrival and I have seen just about every answer in the book! I guess that is to be expected. Could someone please give me accurate descriptions to these questions![/b] |

Perhaps some people do marry blind, as your post suggests. |

Chances are there are Koreans in your hometown, so if all you're interested in is girls, I can save you a year of your life. |

Is marriage a sport in your home town/country? What a dumb question. I'm sure that people who marry Korean girls (including myself) do so for all the right reasons just as those in our home countries would do. It does'nt always work out as people expected or hoped but that is the same the world over.
Racetraitor's advice is sound i think. |

My posed question has nothing to do with "yellow fever" or nocking people who have married a Korean. I probably should have stated it differently. Let me elaborate. If most people stay in country for a short period of time and it seems that alot of westerns do get married to Koreans, then I was wondering if something out of the ordinary was occuring. And yes, alot of people do jump into marriages way too quick, thus the fairly high divorce rates in most western countries!
This web site is excellent for acquiring info. prior to starting an adventure in teaching overseas. As a westerner, I am trying to get a good sense of what is going on in Korea. Especially when it comes to dating and the male-female interactions. Chances are, something is going to pop up. That is why I posed this question. The "sport" comment was directed at rushing into it, not whether or not it is taken seriously. |

When I lived in South Korea, there were not that many western people getting married to Koreans. There are alot on this board, however. A much greater percentage on here than what you will actually see in all of Korea. I knew only 1 man, in all my years in Korea, who married a Korean woman. They are still married now, happy, trying to have a child. I would not characterize Korea as being an easy place to go find someone to marry, if that is what you are looking for. If you are worried that alot of girls are going to chase you down the street, beat you to the ground, and sit on top of you until you agree to marry one of them, you've got another thing coming. |

SOME people get married for the right reasons.
Others get married just because they want a visa. Sad but true. |

Yes this is also true, you are correct, and it is sad but true.
It was mentioned that a higher than average percentage of people on this board are married. This is probaly because there are a number of people on it that have been here a long time, veted interest and all that.
Marrying a Korea though can be difficult, especially with family acceptance etc in many cases. This was extremely easy for me, and many others, but could definatly present some hurdles for some.
I would say though hat most people that are married here have been here a longer time rather than just a short time. I have met a number of people that have married Koreans, but that probaly ahs a lot to do with age group too.
Best advice though, dont jump into marriage too quickly no matter which country or nationality. |

As a newbie, I knew very few (if any) westerners married to Koreans. As a guy who's been here awhile now (8+ years), I know more westerners married to Koreans than not... Your perspective depends how long you've been here and in which circles you run.

This assumption is a bit off, methinks. It's the long-timers (or soon-to-be-longtimers) who get married to Koreans, not newbies - it's just that a lot of the married-to-Korean regulars on Dave's have been here awhile. |
