In Canada this never occured to me because I never bought apples. Either grabbed them off the tree, or bought them at a store that grew them locally with no pesticides.

Now I'm buying a lot of apples to keep healthy, and everyone has been telling me to cut the skins off. Is this Koreans overreacting or are the pesticides really that bad on the produce here?

Will it make me sick?

EVERY korean person will tell you that it's dangerous to eat the skin off of apples. I'm from the states, and everrything I ate was generously doused in pesticides. I always WASHED all my fruit and vegetables. I still eat the skin off apples, bc that is where all the fiber is!
dont eat the skin though in front of koreans. I just do it when i'm alone. I'm sick and tired of hearing Koreans gasp and exclaim how bad the skin is for me.
also, if you are really concerned, at E mart they sell a powder that you can sprinkle on top of fruit and vegetables before you wash them.

They'll kill you quicker than a fan - especially if you eat them at the wrong time of day.

They probably won't make you directly sick, as pesticide residues tend to accumulate in the body's fat reserves and cause problems like cancer in later life. If there are residues, it's definitely a good idea to peel any fruit or vegetables - but I haven't been able to find much information on how bad the pesticide problem is. I guess we don't drink the tap water, so it pays to be prudent.

Apples have a naturally waxy surface, not much gets through, it's reasonably safe to eat as long as it is washed.

I think it is up there with - fans will kill you at night - you have to eat rice and kimchi to live - you need to eat dog meat in summer for virility.

One of my local street fruit sellers always has his fruit on the roadside behind his truck. When it was cold last week he was sat in his truck with the engine on and exhaust fumes pumping directly over all his apples! Lovely. Obviously I maded a note never to buy from him.
So it's always a good idea to wash your fruit, if the pesticide doesn't get you the sulphur dioxide will!

yeah, korean grapes are disgusting, I never successfully managed to swallow one of their skins. I stick with the imported red seedless ones at the big supermarkets.

Yes, the grapes are truly awful...just like much of the rest of the food.

School lunch on Thanksgiving...depressing! Especially since i tried the sweet potatoes. They were icy cold.

Hot foods hot, cold foods cold...basic food safety and I'll bet that they've never heard of it.

They're dangerous if launched with a potato gun. Don't eat the skins as the Koreans probably know something you don't such as a poison put on them to keep the bugs off or to make them get so damned huge like the way to do in Korea.

The pesticides Koreans put on apples locally and imported are much stronger than the pesticides applied in our home countries.

OP, my wife uses baking power to wash off the apples before we eat them. You can find that at E-Mart.

Ks don't eat grape skins either. They might have a point about the skin thing.
