I just had some Korean guy say to me he was surprised I am from America cause he thought I looked Canadian.
Say WHAT??
I told him the only thing that tells me he is Korean is that I am in Korea, where most of the population is Korean. Had I met him in America, or Canada..in the West, I wouldn't have a clue as to his nationality. He just kind of nodded at me. I don't think he understood what I was getting at.

Personally, if I were you.. I would take this as a very high compliment.. I hope you aren't offended by this.. but I find Russian women to be some of the best dressed, best looking white women in the world.. |
Here, here. Sounds more like a compliment to me.
Some Russians look badly dressed but others are not and look simply beautifull. I 'spose I can understand the insinuation issue, though. But two thirds of the insinuation is that you are beautifull. |

Liam,
I think you have something stuck in your mouth. It appears to have some shoe laces and an ankle attached to it. I suggest you remove it before you get a reputation for being too limber. |

I don't know about all this "Russian women are so beautiful" stuff. Yesterday I ran into a couple downtown who were getting their photos taken at the same "Imag-ee" photo place. One had a baring all of her midriff top on. Uck! It was -so- not flattering. If she'd covered it up, she would have just been some girl with two pounds of make-up and a sagging butt, however that was just too gross (the fat was rippling and dimpling even on her back!)! And you all want to say I should be happy when people think I am someone like her and her pimple infested two pounds of make-up friend? No thanks! There is no compliment in being compared to 90% of the Russian "working" girls I've seen in this country. Maybe if I was not secure in my own appearance? Maybe if I was as critical of Western English teaching women's looks as some of the guys on this board? |

Periwinkle,
I was going to ask if you had a unibrow, but folks here are kinda sensitive.
Seriously, I lived next to some Russian dancers when I lived in Suwon. The cloud of perfume hung in the air 10 minutes after they walked to work at the Buffalo Club. One day, a gorgeous Russian girl was wearing spandex biker pants and a spandex top. Lots of skin showing that day. The was a serious traffic problem because of it and one guy was so busy staring at her, he clipped the back of a taxi.
I've met a lot of Russian engineers when I was living in Suwon. It seems that Russian engineers are/were (4 years ago) in high demand at Samsung.
I once told a drunk moron harrassing me on the subway that I was North Korean. He didn't get it but the look on his face was priceless. I look like Rush Limbaugh, which makes it even funnier.
Another time, I told somebody I was from the CSA (Confederate States of America) and that I wasn't American at all.
When I come back to the Land of the Ramien Flower on the Sidewalks, I'm gonna fly the Stars n' bars just for the hell of it. |

That's where my bet's placed.

Periwinkle: I heard the BEST response to the "Are you Russian?" "Are you ...?" question tonight. Learn (in Korean of course!) "No, I'm North Korean!" (Say it with a smile to REALLY mess them up!) Usually stops them in their tracks! |

Anybody who looks back fondly at 5yr old posts on a Korean message board clearly has no life or is a social misfit. Get a fucking grip loser! |

Almost every single day, someone (usually a taxi driver) asks if I am Russian, and I find it VERY ofensive. I dress very professionally, and I conduct myself very respectfully. I don't understand why everyone seems to think I am a prostitute/hostess girl/ nightclub dancer!!!!!!!!! I realize there are Russian women here who aren't involved in the sex industry, and my apologies to them for the sterotyping, but when someone asks me "Are you Russian?", it also feels like an insinuation. I have had people assume I am Russian, and they start going-off about Russian prostitutes to other Koreans in my presence. I feel ashamed and humiliated... My boyfriend is Korean, and he is also embarrassed by the references. I wish it didn't bother me so much, but I resent people thinking filthy things about me, and just because I am young and have blond hair and blue eyes does not make me Russian!!! I have had Koreans apologize, and they lamely say, "Well, you just look Russian..." I find the Russian women very tacky with unatural make-up, bad dye jobs, and wearing clothes that I wouldn't be caught dead in, so NO, I DO NOT look Russian!!!!!!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrr!
I don't know how to handle this, and if someone has a good way of dealing with this, I would REALLY appreciate any advice. I wish I had a sense of humor about it, but it happens EVERY DAY, and I have run out of patience! I can't help getting upset about this, and perhaps I shouldn't take it so personally, but I hate that people think I am involved in the sex industry- knowing they think these things makes me feel really dirty Please help!!
