Quote:

One thousand Christians were today trapped inside the Coptic Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary in West Ain Shams,Cairo, after more than twenty thousand Muslims attacked them with stones and butane gas cylinders. The Church's priest Father Antonious said that the situation is extremely dangerous.

The Muslim mob that attacked the church blocked both sides of the street and encircled the church building, broke its doors and demolished its entire first floor. The mob were chanting Jihad verses as well as slogans saying "we will demolish the church" and "We sacrifice our blood and souls, we sacrifice ourselves for you, Islam", while the entrapped Christians chanted "Lord have mercy".

The incident started on the occasion of the inauguration of the Church today, when the Muslims hastily established a Mosque in the early hours of this morning, by taking over the first floor of a newly-built building facing the Church and started praying there.

When the security forces tried to disperse the mob, they went to nearby homes and shops owned by Christians, and were armed with sticks, butane, knives and other sharp objects. Witnesses said the mob included children from as young as 8-years old to men of over 50-years old, in addition to women.

The Church building was originally a factory that was adapted into its present state, the matter which took over five years to complete and to get the necessary permissions from the authorities to have a Church established.

Human rights organizations and lawyers were refused entry into the besieged Church.

Pretty sad news. The Orthodox Church is the coolest of the three major sects (their view on heaven & so-called hell -- in English translations originally a verb, not a place -- is vastly different for example), and the Coptic Church even moreso IMO considering that Coptic is the descendant of the original Egyptian language.

Where is the link to this story? Anyway, this is a horrible thing. Some people in Egypt are very intolerant of Christians. It's very unfortunate.
I didn't read this on BBC or on CNN. I must have missed it. Clashes between Christians and Muslims in Egypt are not so uncommon. In Lebanon, however, it doesn't really occur. The Sunnis and Christians are allies. Egypt is a country with crushing poverty and Islamic fundamentalism.

You never know, maybe one of the Christian kids was bored and sketched some cartoons on his notebook.

Oh yes, of course, Islamic people claim they are peaceful and the Christians, Americans, and others are the problem in the world today. I don't trust Islamic people, because they will most likely befriend you and then drop kick you in the knees or blow you up.

If you ask a Muslim what Al Quada is, he'll tell you it's the alphabet used in the Quran and there's no such thing as an Al queda group hijacking jets and blowing up US embassies, but that the Christians claim all these things when they aren't true and that the Christian types are just greedy to take natural resources as they're blowing up mountains in Afghanistan to take all the gold, diamonds, and rubies by the jumbo jet load.

They're so crazy...I'd like to better understand what in the world is going on.

I think you are overgeneralizing. Many Arabs are prone to conspiracy theories, and so are many African Americans. It's common among historically repressed and impoverished people. It doesn't mean that kind of ignorance is good.

Many Muslims acknowledge that Al Qaeda exists, and they know there are radicals out there. Many Iraqi Sunnis actually killed scores of Al Qaeda members, and they don't deny their existence, and radical blew up a hotel in Jordan, and many Jordanian civilians died, and that turned more people against certain groups.

Just think of how many people in America were saying Obama was a terrorist and what have you and saying he was an Arab or what have you. The Middle East just has more people like that. However, I disagree with you that there aren't plenty of folks out there who don't recognize that there are radicals out there. Some of them are even battling them. The problem is these guys were trained by the Pakistani intelligence in the 1990s just as the US helped train the Mujahideen, and the whole business of encouraging the fanatics, has back-fired.

You have people in Jordan who think that Saddam Hussein was a great man, but it doesn't mean the majority of Arabs think he was a great hero. It's an illustration of the ignorant thinking you were talking about.

Anyway, read below:

Intellectuals and community leaders called for greater efforts to combat religious fanaticism.

Indian police said Sunday that the only surviving gunman told them he belongs to the Pakistani militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba. The group is seen as a creation of Pakistani intelligence to help fight India in the disputed Kashmir region. Another group, Jaish-e-Mohammed, has also operated in Kashmir. Both are reported to be linked to al-Qaida.

Ten gunmen attacked 10 targets in the three-day assault including a Jewish community center and luxury hotels in India's commercial hub. More than 170 people were killed.

Many Muslims said they are worried such carnage is besmirching their religion.

"The occupation of the synagogue and killing people in hotels tarnishes the Muslim faith," said Kazim al-Muqdadi, a political science lecturer at Baghdad University. "Anyone who slaughters people and screams `Allahu Akbar' (God is Great) is sick and ignorant."
