Do you have any tips on getting a job at a teacher recruitment agency?
It's not for me, it's for a Korean friend. Her English is better than any recruiter I have dealt with. She is pretty smart and hard working. I tried to explain that recruitment demands a certain moral flexibility but it didn't put her off.
I think she could get a job with an agency first, learn the business then start her own thing.
Any ideas on working conditions?

C'mon chaps! I actually did this job for a short while in Thailand.
It's better if a slightly benevolent person is doing the job, I mean someone who won't outright lie and has vaguely good intentions...
Any help appreciated. |

That person wouldn't be that successful here. He'd be scraping by month to month wondering when the sweepstakes van is going to arrive. Unfortunately, it never will.
The key to making the real mulla in recruiting is knowing how to milk the system and take advantage of both schools and naive rookie teachers. If you start trying to make "friends", you're sunk. I'm not saying break the law. What I am saying is "those who learn to operate in the grey areas are those who bank the change". This is true in all professions. If you're going to be successful, ya gotta do questionable things. If you can do this AND sleep at night, you'll be a roaring success.
I know there's a guy here somewhere trying to sell a recruiting website. Maybe that'd be a good start for your friend. |

They want 800,000 won. In return, they will give a used 100,000 won site, AS IS, with over 200,000 won in failed work. There is no data, no clients, no schools, nothing.
A bit like swallowing someone else's food after it's been chewed. There are services out there that will make you a CMS site for 800,000 won and design custom graphics. Personally, I would do it myself and save the money. If you can't do this on your own, then why are you planning on running a business in the first place? |

Before I came to Korea I worked in business to business sales for five years and I can tell her exactly how to get a job as a recruiter. First, your friend should search on the internet for recruiting agencies and get their phone numbers. Next, she needs to start calling them and keep calling them until she finds the person who does the hiring and convinces him or her that she is the most motivated person on the face of the earth. If she doesn't have the stomach for this, she won't last in recruiting or any form of sales. I am glad for the experience I gained working in sales, but I wouldn't want to go back to doing it full time...especially in this economic climate. If she speaks English well, I would suggest she get into teaching. Trust me...money is a hell of a lot easier to make teaching than it is selling in a recession...teetering on the edge of a depression. |

To be an effective recruiter you have to be able to match teachers with schools so that the teacher is happy, signs a contract and actually shows up to work. And you must be sure that the school likes the photograph of the teacher, the sound of the teacher's voice and you must assure them that the teacher will be able to make the students and mothers happy. You have to be able to keep everyone smiling until the school wires a payment for this great happiness.
To accomplish this difficult task you must have a personality that is more open and expansive than ordinary people.
To develop the ideal personality you should go to a hardware store and buy a special funnel with a one quarter inch opening at one end and a twelve inch opening at the other end.
Now you must practice sitting on the narrow end of the spout every day. Place the funnel on a chair and push down as far as you can. Each day you must push farther and farther. When you can sit down on the pointed end and place your bottom comfortably on the chair, you are ready to be a recruiter.
You have now expanded and opened up the most important part of your personality needed to be a recruiter. |

Instant classic post that tells it like it is. That's precious. Thanks for making my morning.
This would even work for those whiny houswives who will bitch and moan and complain about the arrangement of the buttons on a teacher's shirt and the color of his socks. |

I suppose if you got connections with hagwon directors and have a Korean partner who can get you in on being an EPIK recruiter as well as translate and speak for you, then you're good as gold. The rest is common business sense on what to do. If your totally fluent in speaking Korean, then you might be able to handle and execute this challenge on your own. You need to speak Korean to negotiate or have someone act as a bilingual translator on your behalf. The guy or gal in your evening Korean language class who is serious and devoting a full time effort to learning the language is trying out for an international business career. That's the only way to access the opportunity without Korean connections to do the talking for you. I honestly feel overwhelmed by the thought of learning how to speak Korean, because it seems quite difficult, but I met a Pakistani business man who learned in only 4 months of full time effort.
It's not what you know, but who you know so you need a Korean partner to connect the recruits with real jobs. I believe it could be done without being based in Korea if you made the necessary contacts while in Korea so you wouldn't need a Korean business visa to start nor the 50,000,000 won in a Korean bank account for a business visa requirement. You could operate in Canada, make tourist trips to Korea, and once you make some money, bank it to get a business visa so you can legally bank the millions of won you'll be making and xferring out of country. It also may be possible to get the schools to wire you the commission monies to your home account to avoid banking in Korea that would require the 50,000,000 won business visa.
I'm not a recruiter, because I lack Korean speaking skill, the Korean partner and/or connections to hook recruits up with, but I can see how it could practically be a $0 start up business. Since when did you ever see a real opportunity that could be born out of raw motivation? It only exists, because here exists these real job opportunities supporting it. All those insurance and security sales on commission offers and those business in a box multilevel marketing gimmicks at home are not worth their weight in paper due to not being supported by real jobs that turn real profits. |

After studying Korean for three years, I can state with absolute certainty this guy is full of BS. Unless you are talking about learning the Korean alphabet...sure you can do that in an afternoon. Fluent enough to conduct business in 4 months...not. |

An honest recruiter is ALMOST impossible to find. If you find one, WOW, do your best to keep them on your side. |

Oh, a topic like this would be so great to have images!
What does it take to be a recruiter? I love the illustration of the funnel, that is pretty accurate.
Also perhaps a dreadful skill in lurking around websites where unsuspecting innocents post their resumes, harvesting their e-mails onto your blacklist, wrenching people's trust by promising wealth, bliss and happiness in order to lure them towards the Korean horrorweb. Then gradually suck them towards the depths of despair in a hogwon hell like wonderland prison or fantasyland dungeon and as soon as you see they are trapped then grab your bag of money and run away chortling with glee at yet another victim doomed to serve their time due to your nefarious evil lies.
I would recommend practicing this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-4f_NMUxcY&feature=related
When it is perfected, well then you know you are getting close. |
