|
|
This winter I'm going to be training at Rawai Muay Thai Boxing Camp: http://www.rawaimuaythai.com
As I will be there for five weeks and a tourist visa is only one month, I will need to make a visa run. I'm thinking of going to Singapore because I'd be able to see the whole country in three days.
Has anyone been to Singapore, from Thailand or otherwise? Any insight, suggestions, or warnings would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! |

They have daily visa runs from Phuket to Penang in Malaysia if you are looking for the cheapest and fastest way. They are about 2000 Baht and they pick you up in the morning in a minivan and drive to Penang, it is about 4 hours. Go across the border have lunch and return the same afternoon. The minibus will have you back in Phuket in the evening. Go to any travel agent on the island to arrange it.
I have also been to Singapore and it is easy to see in just a couple of days, if you go there a good budget hotel downtown in the New Seventh Story hotel. Book far in advance. Cheap flights can be had with Silk Air and Air Asia goes to KL frequently with low fares. |

If you get a tourist visa before you go, you should be able to stay for 60 days. And you can extend your stay by 10 days at Phuket Immigration.
You might even be able to get a Non-O visa try asking the Thai consulate.

If you get a 30-day visa on arrival then the cheapest visa run is to Ranong (Myanmar) (it's not fun).
Unless you want to go to Singapore... |

Well, I must nitpick a little bit here. For most nationalities, one does not get a "visa on arrival" or a "tourist visa". Instead, the visa arranged at an embassy or consulate in another country will give you 60 days. Arriving without a visa means that you will get a 30 day visa exemption stamp. The visa on arrival is available for some countries, but it is only 15 days.
I won't make your life difficult by explaining why one should not be studying on the wrong visa. They don't care all that much in Thailand.
Simply go to the embassy and get a Tourist Visa, or do the trip to Malaysia. You don't need to go to Singapore unless you want to. |

That is some stupid advice. Don't overstay your visa unless you absolutely must. This will leave a mark in your passport that other countries don't like to see should you need a visa for them at a future date. Aside from that, if you are caught on an overstay, it isn't pretty. Sure, immigration at the airport doesn't care, but the police officer who might stop you for a number of reasons sees things quite differently. Breaking the law isn't a good solution. |
