As far as the ones still playing, I have to say my all-'round favourite is Nik Lidstrom, but I love watching Ovechkin play. Slow start this year, but he's a one-man highlight reel.

To wit:

But hey...anyone check out this kid Lucic playing for the Bruins? He's got some stomp to him and he scores a bit. He's only 20, but he might be the power-forward the B's have been crying for since Neely's leg calcified.

Here he makes the Beantown faithful cry into their overpriced beers, but with joy, for punching out an ex-B Hab.

...and here he crushes the much larger Komisarek.

Used to be Ken Dryden, then Paul Coffey, then Wayne Gretzky, then Trevor Linden, then Michael Peca, then Marian Hossa, then the lockout happened Confused ... since then, Daniel Alfredsson.

Honorable mentions to Ray Bourque, Geoff Courtnall, Pavel Bure, Esa Tikkanen, Steve Yzerman, Joe Nieuwendyk, Dominik Hasek, Petr Forsberg, Patrick Marleau, Chris Pronger, and Alex Ovechkin.

I don't think I left anyone out who I ever considered my fav, who I cheered for and attentively watched regardless of the team they were on, guys who at least for part of their career were simply beyond incredible to me, a pure joy to watch. Some were the best at something they did, others were simply exceptional at things I saw them do, or with a style I admired constantly.

Never saw an L.A. King I really like (other than Deadmarsh, whose Avs days wowed me), never loved a Leaf (though I respected Sundin and Yushkevich a lot), never could stomach a Penguin (other than Recchi), never could root for a Blackhawk (until this season's crop of fast talented youngsters: Kane, Sharp, etc).

Fav teams were always Canadiens, Canucks, Oilers, Capitals, Sharks and for some period of time the following: North Stars, Stars, Sabres, Isles, Sens.

Mine is somewhat similar over the years to your favourites, VanIslander.

Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden, Chris Nilan, Larry Robinson, Mark Hunter, Dale Hunter, Wendel Clark, Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Trevor Linden, Stan Smyl, Chris Neil, Dany Heatley. Even though I'm not a fan of his team, at the top of the current heap, Jerome Iginla.

I cannot argue against Ovechkin, I like him but he plays for the Capitals, and I follow them only a little bit.

Mr Dokdo, you're at the bottome of the heap; lose the sentence fragment, dumbass.

You are welcome.

Funny. I almost included Lafleur, Robinson, Messier and Dale Hunter to my honorable mention list but they never were my fav, just guys on a totally awesome list that would be much longer than a fav list. Wink

Didn't like Nilan though. He was up and down, sometimes brilliant, sometimes a bonehead; and speaking of gawd-awful defensive play: Wendel Clark, ugh. He was like Sergio Momesso, a guy you could like only if you love thunderstorms: mesmerizing but destructive, sloppy but shiny. Never was a Heatley fan, swore up and down the day of the Hossa trade, still pisses me off, though I recognize their near-equivalent talent level offensively, Hossa is miles better away from the puck, I actually watching his remarkable two-way play as a Thrasher, all for naught, as few saw him there so he didn't get many Hart votes the season he most deserved it.

loving watching Alfie play...skates so well...and yes, i am a bias Sens fan. But with that, Mike Fisher. Plays with 100% heart. Zedano Chara. Wow. Try moving him, getting by him or hitting him. He is a beast and a great guy!

Non Sens player...Iggy is great to watch.

Talking about bias,... VanIslander's fav team of all time was the 1991-92 Canucks:

Linden, Ronning, Larionov, Bure, Nedved, Lumme, Lidster, Babych, Diduck, Murzyn, Kirk McLean, Greg Adams, Geoff Courtnall, Jim Sandlak, Sergio Momesso, Gary Valk, Gino Odjick

Divisional champions that season, almost knocked off Edmonton in the second round... I can actually close my eyes and visualize games they played in my head. It helps that I'm a chess champ, but more so it's about how intensively I watched Vancouver that season. Sigh. Speed, energy, quick passes on the transition, aggressive forechecking, high tempo games. Looooved it.

I loved Ronning and Gelinas. Ronning because of his small size and the way he played and gelinas because he always tried hard. Never gave up that guy.
I have huge respect for yzerman after he led the detroit red wings past my beloved canucks while skating on one knee. The guy could barely walk off the ice but was one of their best players on the ice.

I recall something funny Gelinas said about his linemate Linden when Trev went down with a series of minor injuries after holding the then-current record for most consecutive games played by an active NHLer:

"He went from the Ironman to the Tin Man" Laughing I saw him say that on the six o'clock evening news and I laughed about it all night long.

Canucks fan here, but I'd have to say Iginla. He does what it takes to win. Should be Canada's captain in 2010 IMO.

I don't know how anyone can take this question seriously and then not answer with someone who's playing on their team. I think Iginla should captain our 2010 team as well (if Sakic retires), but how could I pick him as my favorite NHLer? ForceOne - what's up with you? VanIslander - Alfredsson? Jeez you guys...
