When I visited Busan or areas of Seoul like Dongdaemun, people always assumed I was Russian.
There were several occasions where vendors would start speaking to me in Russian until I tell them in Korean that I'm American, not Russian.
I asked a person why some would assume I was Russian, and they said it was the gelled combed back hair, the black motorcycle jacket and the muscular build and the height (190cm). Also, he said that I would walk around with a scowl on my face.
So, I started to take it that they were referring to me as looking like a gangster......
And it wasn't just in Korea this happened either. When I was in Shanghai and Beijing, people normally thought I was either Russian or German until I started to speak English, that really threw them for a loop.
I think Koreans have an assumption as to what roles foreigners from each country should play in Korea and it is understandable when someone from one category is mistaken for someone in another category, especially if the job is in a questionable profession. |

She certainly deserves to be mistaken for whatever she thinks Russians are. |

People here in LA speak their native languages loudly and proudly, with no concern for anyone around them. While walking around a store I will hear at least 4 different languages, and depending on the location, most likely one of those languages will include Korean. Funny thing how Koreans give us crap about speaking English in public in their sacred homeland. |

Funny but I look very Russian and got asked it a lot back home by other Russians if I'm Russian. I even was asked by other Russians and Westerners here. I'm somewhere from that area but not exactly Russian. But here, I've only been asked by my students so far and they don't know better. I usually quipped back with a "Do I speak Russian?!" and that shut them up. Most Korean adults haven't assumed anything so far and usually ask me where I'm from first. Maybe I've just run into the right people. As for Russian women, some can dress a bit over the top compared to American/Canadian women as do a lot of Korean women but removing all of that, they are still very genetically gifted women. |

Hell, I'm a balding, 6'5", brown eyed/haired Canadian male and I get asked if I'm Russian sometimes. Koreans, especially rural ones, have little to no experience with foreigners and will ask stupid questions. I honestly don't think the "Are you a Russian?" comment necessarily always means "Are you a prostitute?".
That said, I used to work with a woman here who was Canadian, of Russian descent, and looked it. If you think you've got it bad... |

You just made me think of something. I don't generally find Americans all that loud or patriotic either. Generally...but you did make me think of something. Well, most cities your supposedly 'standard white american male' is generally meek...
In most American cities, certainly when I lived in NYC, every other nationality on earth seemed so loud and proud of their roots...Italians, or Puerto Ricans or wherever.
It never occurred to me that these many proud immigrant groups go back out into other countries suddenly VERY AMERICAN and shouting that...when back home, they are so (whatever)-else they are boisteriously shouting all over the place. |

Well, I've dated Russian women. None of them were blonde, but they both had light eyes. One was very white with blue eyes, and the other one that I am seeing has blue-grey eyes, but brown hair. Many Koreans think like rednecks, and they are hypocrites. Tons of their women are involved in prostitution.
Maybe, more Koreans are involved in prostitution than Russians. Russia is a poorer country than Korea. Some Russian women have more of an excuse to engage in prostitution. They have families. However, plenty of the Russians here, the majority of them, are either students, work here, or are married to a Korean. Koreans just often like to talk bad about different races.
Hey, when I was wearing an Italian jersey last year, I was spoken to in Italian. Granted, I understand Italian and could pass, but people shouldn't make assumptions.
Anyway, honey, Korea is the country of Archie Bunkers. They are missing the pick up trucks with the stars and bars and the guns.
That's all. If you don't like what they are saying, then be upfront about it, and tell them it's not cool, and that you're an American. Frankly, I wouldn't put up with it. Many Koreans don't like being called on something or confronted, so go ahead and do it. |

I went to a high-school with a lot of Russians and Ukrainians in Toronto. The style you just described there fits the description of about 3/4 of kids that were either Russian or Ukrainian (as well as Belarusian, Romanian, etc...), although the black leather jackets they wore weren't motorcycle jackets.
And no, they weren't gangsters. I'm sure many of them wanted to go for the Russian mafia look but it's just how majority of them dressed. |

Yeah, I wrote that 4 years ago. I wrote some stupid posts wasting time on this forum. Didn't mean any malice toward Russians, and I know a lot of great Russian people now. I had a hard time when I first came here. Btw, I've also gotten over judging posters and their "shameful attitudes". I don't judge specific posters as "ugly people" based on a post anymore. |

So, that's a very old post, eh? I didn't like what you said about Russians, either, since I had Russian friends, dated two Russians, but it's no big deal, really. I know you didn't really mean anything by it. I didn't really comment on what was said about them so much. No one's perfect. What's your status now? Are you still seeing that same Korean guy? How is life treating you after having been here for four years?
Cheers from one expat to another.... |

no, I was not describing how every Russian male or even every Russian gangster would dress.
I was talking about myself and how Koreans perceived it to be gangster style for them. |

Hey I am happy that your thinking towards people of other nationalities has evolved. Your post was alarming and quite frankly many of the responses were also shocking and disappointing. While you didn't mean any malice you have to admit your generalization towards Russians was just as bad as the Koreans assuming you were one. Again, it was 4 years ago so water under the bridge.
Also, I will not apoligize (not that you are asking for it) for my
"Ugly person" statement. These were your words and your feeling you blasted on the internet. Unless it was someone posing as you I feel that any opinion people may have of you favorable or not is justified. Again, I am happy that you have evolved in your thinking although the "I have Russian friends" is pure weak sauce. Thats like the famous, "Oh, I know black people"..
anyhow.. It's all good... glad you moved on. |

Personally, if I were you.. I would take this as a very high compliment.. I hope you aren't offended by this.. but I find Russian women to be some of the best dressed, best looking white women in the world.. |
.
tiger beer, i agree with you that rusian women seams to dressed, and look better than other western girls. but dont you think is as a result of the type of job they do?
i think, korean men find rusian girls to be more attractive and also find easy to talk to compare to other western ladies. the fact that most korean men dont speak english make it more diffilcult for them to talk to western ladies but rusian tend to study korean language, which make it easier for them.
possibly, if you tell them where you come from that will solve the problem. |

I dunno, I find Russians do indeed average to more tacky make-up and clothing choices, and Moscow feels to me like the world capital of scowls & dye-jobs.
There's a lot to love about Russians and Russian culture, but let's not pretend it's all roses.
The OP was having a tough time in Korea and needed to vent, but she has moved on. So should we all.
Next time a Korean asks you if you're Russian, just say "nope" and leave them to their assumptions.
Unless, like me, you feel like responding by asking in Russian if that person is Japanese. |
