The topic has come up among some female friends about helping out at a girls orphanage in Seoul. Does anyone have any information?

Immi laws and such can be wacky as we all know. I would recommend going through a volunteer organization such as the one highlighted in this Korea Times article. Good luck!

I "don't" understand what "all" the "quotes" are about in your post but it "makes" you look like a "moron".

I am just curious..

why do you and "your friends" want to volunteer at a "girls orphanage" - as per say just an "ordinary orphanage"

what other "extra-curricular" activities do you and "your friends" plan to do whilst at the "girls orphange"?

I asked about a girls orphanage because another poster asked me about it and others I know asked me about it- and ALL ARE WOMEN.

Many teachers AND US soldiers volunteer at orphanages around Christmas time to help give the orphans Christmas parties and presents.

You don't want anyone to volunteer at an orphanage around Christmas? You prefer to flame someone for even asking about volunteering to help orphans have a decent Christmas? That is horrible and you have no defense for what you posted.

Mods, please delete yesterday's post and ban the user. Anyone who opposes helping orphans at Christmas time and posts that anyone interested in helping orphans at Christmas is a pedophile should be banned.

The only orphanages I'm familiar with in Korea are Salvation Army children's homes and they're all mixed. I know a number of women who've volunteered there and it's worked out fine; indeed some have found it an extremely rewarding experience. What do your friends think they'll be volunteering to do, dormitory supervision? Sex education? Are they afraid of boys?

I am actually the one that asked wylies on facebook about the girls orphanage, the reason being is that the facebook group for the boys orphanage already has most of the kids picked as far as presents so I would like to buy some gifts for maybe a girls orphanage or any for that matter, I don't really care. But personally I like buying for girls better b/c I ma a girl and can relate to their fascination with all things glitter.

wtf is wrong with some of you

nolegirl,

I think it's great you are looking into helping orphans. Some people here just have a sick mind. It makes you wonder how they come up with ideas like that.

that makes sense

I am just a bit reluctant - to give info - when people state that they wish to volunteer at a "girls orphanage"

especially - after Ron Fowler (many of you know him) messed up and had a few orphanages ban foreigner from volunteering at them...

However - before you do so - (go and gifts out at an orphanage) - make sure you go to Immigration and inform them what you will be doing -

(It is not illegal to volunteer at an orphanage. It is illegal to do so with an E2 visa and without the permission of Immigration).

Yesterday, you should volunteer to help those less fortunate than yourself, especially around the holidays. It's good for your soul.

Christmas is an important time for us Westerners and it's good to be generous at this time.

Out of interest though, are there extra volunteering efforts around Seollal and Chuseok as well? Those holidays are much more important for Koreans than Christmas and I expect the attention would be even more welcomed then by the children and Korean volunteers.

Good on those of you helping out this Christmas^^

Oh and on a side note, what happened to that Ron Fowler guy? I think I saw his webpage a couple of years ago. He was the crazy guy who thought the CIA or some other organization was following him everywhere he went right? Seemed a little delusional..

What a bizarre thread. If you really want to help out some orphan girls you could pool your money and find someone who's going to Daegu in the next month and meet up with me with the following:

- a pocket translator for a high school girl who really tries hard at school and really wants to get into university.

- a couple of nice handbag for a couple of HS girls who are likely not going to uni but are really kind and helpful.

- two MP3 players and picture dictionaries for a couple of middle school girls who don't have a lot of the things their friends at school do.

- some random western snacks and goodies for a bunch of elementary girls.

- some puzzles, puzzle books, DVDs, and board games for a girls' dormitory.

Of course, doing this would probably leave me with a lot of explaining to do to some very slighted orphan boys, lol.

But why, if the idea was actually to give some poor kids Christmas gifts would you request information about girls' orphanages in Seoul? And why would western women need this information because they apparently have a better idea what orphan girls might want than people who actually work with them?

If you really want to make a difference but only want to do a one-off, fire-and-forget charity act find someone from the Salvation Army and see how you can make a contribution to their 'Dreams Come True' programme for sending middle school students on a one week experiential learning trip to other Asian countries.

This said thread has been cleaned to conform it to the spirit of the terms of service. Remember, as the former moderator, the Dude said, Dave's ESL Cafe is not your personal playground. You're teachers, so we're assuming that you can be mature about how you interact with each other on the boards.

Thanks for that, Enrico.

It is becoming obvious that this witchhunt atmosphere now pervasive in our society is doing more harm than good. It really needs to stop.

And some people really need to get a life. A good way to start would be by volunteering at a children's orphanage during Christmas.

There's a girl's orphanage in Seoul called Zion.

But, no one speaks English, and they are rather strict as to who can volunteer there, I'm sure you can understand why. But if you can speak Korean and are very interested, I suggest you contact them and maybe they can have you tutor. (Google Zion girl's home Seoul).

Sorry but you are way off mark. If I want to volunteer at a girls orphange instead of boys what the big deal. I personally would never volunteer for a cat shelter nor pick up trash on the side of the road.
These are all good organizations but I would prefer to volunteer at a girls/boys orphanage. The boys orphange is far from me and all the kids are picked.

So what you are saying is you should not buy the middle school girls in Daegu a MP3 player b/c I don't know them so I should give the money to their mother b/c she knows them, you sound retarded. Your missing the point of adopting a kid for christmas.

And on a side note, before even reaching the age of 18 I had over 1500 hours of community service, imostly working with homeless and aids children so don't give me this BS like I am not "worthy" enough or some crap.

thanks jhyum, but this orphange sounds like it would be hard to volunteer for. I'll look into it though
