Anyone use this?
Do you see this device becoming the wave of the feature for ordering, reading and searching for books?
a few questions for those who use this gadget: what is the battery life like? does one need a wireless contract with a mobile company, etc. to use it and check for books? how bulky is it, since many people normally carry a notebook computer in a small computer bag? is it light? is the technology still advancing for these things with lots of bugs, or are they already pretty good?
desk top / lap top computers are how i normally read E-books...Thinking about getting one of these but just not convinced yet whether it's the way to go. |

would it work in Korea? Looks like it will have cell phone type coverage. Does that mean one more product that wont be available here? Can it connect to wifi instead of their network? |

The only reason the Kindle is better than the Sony ereader, is that the kindle displays black print on a white backdrop - book simulator.
Other than that, it's Sony all the way..
Kindle is $100 more expensive
Kindle doesn't have backlighting (what were they thinking??)
Kindle wireless doesn't work outside USA (wireless book download is an excuse to jack up the unit cost to a totally unreasonable cost. . Everyone has a computer - don't need wireless download)
Both the kindle and Sony are grossly overpriced. ebook are $9, so the ereaders should be $125 tops. Wait until china or korea starts making ereaders. |

I would love to get the Kindle if I lived in the US. At the moment, that's the only play you can use it to it's full potential. It would be great to wirlessly download a book instantly on to your Kindle. I could also see myself potentially losing a lot of money this way.
Actually, a better buy is the Sony Ebook reader. It supports more ebook formats and, at the moment, is a little cheaper. One of the blogs I read recently did an article on the differences in ebook readers. http://dearauthor.com/wordpress/2008/11/23/2008-holiday-ebook-reading-buying-guide/
Kindle supports the amazon format, mobi, prc, and txt
Sony Ereader supports bbeb, doc, pdf, rtf, and txt.
information taken from here: http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_formats#Supported_Format_Matrix
Plus the Ereader supports pdf's that are not drm locked. This is truly the better buy because you're not stuck to just buying a device where you have to buy the book.
In the end, it's up to convince and what your willing to pay.[/url] |

I have been looking all over the place for these and have been told that they don't sell them. They're not popular in North-East Asia since people here use their mobile phones to read books. To me it's not the same thing but that's what I was told by a few people. Gotta go back to North America to get one. |

Kindle 2 Gets Mixed Reviews
Looks like the Kindle 2 isn't all what many were hoping it'd be. It was released yesterday or today and is still about $350 with only minor changes.
Quote: |
Rather than make any dramatic changes, Amazon has tweaked the original book-sized Kindle. The new version is a third of an inch thick, weighs about 10 ounces, gets more battery life, and has an improved display. In addition, Amazon has added more storage and has made the device faster. The price, however, remains the same: $359.
"Plain and simple, waaayyyy too much money for a book reader," one person wrote on Amazon's customer discussion group. "I could buy a mountain of paperbacks for the price of this thing. Just like the first Kindle, I'll pass."
People who bought the first Kindle agreed that the device was pricey, but among their major complaints of the new version was the lack of a content management system that would allow them to put files in folders to better organize their books, magazine and newspaper articles, and other content.
"If it [Kindle 2] had that I would have considered it," a Kindle 1 owner said. "As it stands now, it seems like a minor upgrade." |

Why do they keep adding features to these things. I don't want need wireless, backlights, keyboards. Hell i don't even need a touch screen (however that could be useful). I don't need it to play mp3s, podcasts,or any other crap; just txt, pdfs and maybe one or two other formats
I just want a nice simple device bout the same size as a paperback. A decent battery life, robust and takes an sd card. And I want this e-book for no more than 200,000 won.
I simply want a book replacement, that if I dropped or lost it I wouldn't feel too bad |

As far as formats are concerned, I want one that can read pdf and lit files. There's a Chinese brand that does...but I prefer the look and reputation of Sony. |

Purchasing a Sony eReader in Korea? You're in luck if you can find someone willing to sell it to you used.
If not, your best bet is have it delivered to a friends/ family's house in USA (I don't know if they ship to the UK, sorry) and have them ship it here. That's how I got mine. My family took it out of the package and shipped it to me as a 'used' electronics product.
But, the only thing I love about the Kindle is the wireless book downloading. With the Kindle you are stuck with the amazon book format while the sony ereader supports books that aren't drm formated. Plus, with websites like fictionwise (you get money back on certain books purchased) and booksonboard (similar program, buy a book and get credits to be used on future purchases), I don't know why someone would want to pay more for amazon's over priced ebooks. |
