Hi. I recently bought a digital sound recording studio that is a few years old. There are two ways you can get the data off it onto your pc, an SCSI connection (also to an SCSI external CDRW) and via SPDIF cables.
However my friend at school (the "computer guy") looked at it and after researching all afternoon said it's going to be difficult.

Basically with regards the SPDIF he said they don't make soundcards any more with the RCA type inputs (see photo- my soundcard doesn't have either), just the optical inputs. As the recording studio has the RCA type my friend says I have to buy a converter for each cable, these converters are 30,000W each as well as a different soundcard. All in with the cables it's going to come to well over 100,000W. Can you think of any way around this? Or where I could buy a soundcard with the SPDIF RCA inputs still? Or even where I could get a SCSI CD re-writer (MMC compatible -although it is much more difficult to mix with this and using a CDRW is the last resort)?

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated, I'm tearing my hair out here

Sound cards and other audio interfaces are most definitely still made with the RCA type SPIDF connection. What are the brand and model names of your sound card and audio gear?

Also, if the gear you bought has a SCSI connector, then my guess is that it's more than a few years old (although I could be wrong). What sort of work are you looking to get done? I'd be more than glad to help you out with this, I just need some more info. Don't tear your hair out too quickly

The best/easiest way to get your music off your DPS-16 is to use a SCSI burner. Get a Korean friend to find a used one for you on the internet (or trawl eBay)--it should be pretty easy and affordable. I've had one that's worked for almost six years. SCSI is dead tech, but it's fast and good. Don't fear it

Buy a sound card w/ optical connections. I have a omega Claro +, sounds nice!

In the case of the SCSI burner though, the OP would be stuck mixing with whatever piece of gear he's got. So, is the goal to bring multi-track work or a two-mix into your computer? Or are you happy as a clam mixing with whatever gear you've purchased, and are just looking to get your audio onto some other medium?

Hi everyone. I posted this question just before i left for Seoul and am really grateful for the responses and suggestions.

Basically I am a rookie at this. I had a Tascam (analogue) 4-track for about three years and used to have hours of fun just messing about with it and making songs. This is the first digital recorder i have ever got. It is the Akai DPS-16 listed on the buy/sell forum a couple of weeks ago, about 6 years+ old.

I think I will probably mix the tracks on the recorder itself and then transfer them onto the computer. I basically want to be able to get them onto the computer in as complete form as possible so that I can make an actual physical product and also send the music to friends back home (e.g. in mp3 format). But no doubt as I learn more I will eventually want to mix on the computer, a couple of friends have suggested Fruity-loops.

From what I understand about the CD burner, you have to be careful about getting a compatible one and also the manual says you can only burn two tracks at a time (I guess tracks is used in the context of "tracks 1-16" and not actual whole song tracks - am i wrong?).

It looks like I'm going to try to get a soundcard with the RCA-type SPDIF connection (rather than messing about with all of the converters), but I may also get a cd burner too -just in case and also these SCSI's are probably only going to get rarer as time goes on. My pc is actually on it's last legs so I hope I can build a pc with the right kind of soundcard in the near future. But thank you again everyone and any more advice on this matter would be greatly received.
