This really sucks.

The Dell Mini-12 is a wonderful machine, however they purposely crippled it so that you can't upgrade the Ram from 1 gig. This is a glaring problem, because 1 gig is not enough to comfortably run Vista, which it comes installed with.

Sure, you can take the entire machine apart and attempt to reinstall a 2 gig ram module, however the mainboard chipset has been designed only to see 1 gig no matter what you do. Go ahead and install 2 gig -- it sees 1 gig.

I tried the machine out today, and it would be near perfect for me, except for this serious issue. It is too slow with 1 gig of Ram.

Disgusting.

I bought an MSI Wind a few months back and it is great. I got the the RAM upgraded to 2 GB by the shop (on GMarket) for an extra 25K. It does a fine job for what most people need a laptop for. Comes with XP but Vista would probably run fine with 2gig RAM. Was about 670K won, all up.

The wind is one of the top models I'm considering. What's the difference between that and the Averactec? Enuri lists the Averatec as having a 10.2 inch monitor, and the Wind having 10, but I think that's a misprint.

They look about identical. I like the Dell Mini-9 too, but it's not quite there yet for me.

The Averatec is exactly the same as the Wind. They licensed it in a ton of countries under different names. There are something like 14 different kinds all identical just different names.

I think the Averatec might have a smaller battery too. I payed a little extra for the bigger battery and HDD but that is the standard option now anyway and it's still the same price. It is a great little machine.

They're pretty close in price. I've read online that the slightly older models of the Wind (and probably the Averatec) may suffer from a wifi card issue. You're safe if you purchase the card with "a/g/n" capability, however. I guess you can look on the bottom and read this off of a sticker. The newer ones also have the larger 160gb HDD.

Is it a touchscreen? I dont' see a trackball/trackpad for mouse functions.

Trackpads are important. Always try them out beforehand if you intend to use one a lot.

I was thinking about buying one of the new (and highly overpriced) Sony TT ultralight laptops. I have since changed my mind, because despite being $2,000, the trackpads don't work right. I tried 4 models, and all but one had issues. By issues, I mean that the trackpads didn't always pick up my finger movement, and the mouse didn't move well.
