Korea deserves the kind of teachers they get, here's why:

BA/BA 3-4 year university degree

You must be a native English speaker

NO experience is required

NO TESOL certificate is required

As long as ads similar to this one are posted on the internet, Korea and Koreans have no business complaining about the people they get.

END OF STORY.

I agree with you on that one. On the other hand, the misfits hired through such ads have no businesses pretending to be teachers or claiming they deserve to be treated as teachers. The "teachers" get a pretty good deal---essentially a long, paid vacation---and the Koreans have their kids entertained. A win-win situation, in my opinion, so I don't understand all the whining that goes on around here.

The whining is because a lot of people come here with TEFL training or with B Ed degrees or with several years teaching experience and get treated the same as any clown just off the boat.

Who does? When? You're good at straw men and false premises, but not much else.

Teachers complain about a lack of contractual compliance and an autocratic management style.

A lot? Come on ... Anyway, what on earth are they doing here if they can get a better deal elsewhere?

I agree that Koreans could do better on many fronts---perpetual lying, cheating on contracts, and xenophobia are not very helpful---but the misfit "teachgers" that they employ should also be grateful to have jobs that are essentially vacations. We should be fair and look at both sides of the coin.

wanting to feel safe is hardly a fascist ideal.

No but the changes you have hinted at to give you that safety surely are.

I think most people here have witnessed or directly exprienced really, really unprofessional police work here in Korea -- as well as incompetence from other civil servants. Some posters here would like those people to be able to invite themselves into your house to have a look around whenever they like.

Never forget: We are always a stonesthrow from fascism. We could see it in our lifetimes.

Once again, I'll ask you: Who are claiming they deserve to 'treated as teachers', and what does that even mean?

Perhaps not a majority, but there are quite a few PS teachers in this district who have real education degrees and or overseas experience.

They are being subjected to the same treatment as anyone with a BA and no experience.

There was one guy last year who had a Masters in Education who was treated like he was 5 years old.

To be fair, most education majors I've known in Asia haven't fared very well in handling themselves and dealing with the day to day life and frustrations of living in a foreign country. Sometimes people who are not the best examples have what it takes to hang in and endure until the end of the contract.[/list]

And there highlights the problem with teaching here in korea. The hiarcial system is totally destructive to effeciency and makes everyone subserviant to someone. Most workers just pass the buck, and means effeciency and communication drops off.
It is this what also chases Koreans away from their own country .

That certainly sucks. In such cases one should simply vote with the feet---quickly.

3% of those on E-2 visas really are teachers of English---they have a proper command of the language, can teach, want to teach, and are serious about teaching---and they deserve better than the other 97%, who are merely holidaymakers. For their part, the latter should not insist that they are in the same category as the former.

That said, I agree that Koreans should do a better job in their treatment of all foreigners, including the English-"teaching" holidaymakers. I'm sure you will agree.

Where do you get that figure?

Are you talking about Public Schools, universities, hagwons or all together?
