I know this is kind of a technology question but when I posted it there I didn't get any responses so I thought I'd try my luck here.

I just got Internet after several missed meetins and communication problems and I'm having problems. It periodically disconnects either every few minutes or hours and I have to unplug the modem for a few seconds and plug it back in to get it to connect.

I also can't access certain websites like skype. I can use skype to call people but if I want to purchase credit or anything I can't. But I'm not sure why I can access some websites and not others. Although when the guy installed it he had to use his computer to complete whatever he had to do on the web because it wouldn't load on my computer (and with all the problems I was worried about this but since he didn't speak English he couldn't understand what I was saying).

Also I don't know if this is related to the Internet or nto but my computer has been restarting on its own. Its happening at 3 or 2 am so I'm asleep and I'm not sure what causes it but this has only been happening since I got internet and its a new computer.

So any thoughts as to what is going on? I know I could get a teacher to try and call KT internet but its already been such a hassle I'd like to at least make sure its not a problem on my end or with my computer before I contact KT.

Like when I tell student who want to learn to write - details, details, details.

Questions to answer.
What kind of system? Give all the info you can CPU, memory, laptop or desktop,

What OS are you running? What software are you running? What may be a problem can be simple as running the wrong program.

What kind of Internet? Are you on cable, ADSL, or wireless? What is the name and model number of your modem?

What have you tried to fix the problem? Have you googled and RTFM to the best of your ability.

So until you can give us more details here some advice that might help. Try shutting down all programs that you can that are running in the background or taskbar.

I had the same problem with the fist modem that KT gave me. I called their English-language helpline, and they sent a guy out to replace it the same day. It's worked perfectly ever since.

As for the rest, I agree with Skippy.

Sorry I should have included that info.

Its an HP laptop with 3 GB RAM and 200 GM Memory with a 2.00GHz AMD Turion processor with a Windows VISTA OS

I only really use my laptop to download music, check email, and use skype and i've only had it a couple months so there's not much on here in terms of software. I have Norton Anti-virus and i've read sometimes firewalls can cause the problem so i've turned that off to see if anything changed and it didn't.

I've also tried my laptop with other internet connections and it seems to work fine.

My KT connection is an ADSL and the modem says KT Higate 4E.

I've googled the problem, searched the forum to see if anyone posted about similar problems and I just finished talking to someone in English with KT customer service which resulted in me being passed to 3 different people all who didn't know what to do.

I'm going to try and go tomorrow and try and ask if we can try it with a different modem.

I didn't bother trying to talk about my modem problem over the phone to KT - I just told them that it kept disconnecting and insisted they come out and replace it (which they did, very efficiently). If you're assertive about this you should be fine.

Regarding the restarting, I don't know a lot about Vista but your computer may be set up to automatically download updates, some of which will require a restart to install fully.

It may also be that your laptop is overheating, though if you aren't running any programs in the background this may less likely. Generally they aren't designed to be kept switched on all the time (it screws the battery up for one thing).

I have a laptop with Vista, and it periodically turns itself off during the middle of the night and restarts after it has downloaded updates. Pain in the arse really, expecially since last time it did so, I lost the Powerpoint I had been working on for class the following day!!
