I came here in the mid to late 1990's thinking of Asians, and Koreans in particular, as being an inferior race. I was ashamed to tell people back home that I was working in Asia, much less Korea.
This was all based on the fact that I grew up in America in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's (if it matters) with Charlie Chan, "made in Japan", the Green Hornet's assistant (what was his name?), MASH on tv, Korean hookers running/manning the massage parlors in the city nearby, Bruce Lee movies, the spectacle of Korean made cars being introduced in the USA, unbelievable stories I heard from my older cousin who was stationed here in the US army in 1970, etc. You get my drift, I'm sure.
So you can imagine the irony I saw/experienced when I arrived here and subsequently learned that Koreans actually feel the same way toward us foreigners, ie, the Korean "cultural superiority" complex.
Haha, ain't life funny? |

Nah, ironic would be more like a protester shouting "DOWN WITH USA" while wearing Nike shoes, eating at Popeye's, watching baskerball, listening to rap, and enjoying the freedom they otherwise would not have under Kim Jong Il. |

Koreans are better scientists because they use chopsticks.
I've heard that statement before and it drips with all kinds of irony, depending on how you take it. |

The most ironic thing about Korea by far is the amount of foreigners that say the Koreans are racist while they come onto daves or hang out with thier friends making racist comments, comment on thier inferiority, or badmouthing the Koreans for something.
That runs a close second to The amount of foreigners who complain about how bad the money and the working conditions are while the sign their 5th contract |

Anybody who thinks 'races' are superior or inferior is a moron. Societies are a different ballgame, Hamlet 씨. Bemoaning Russian society doesn't make me a racist, right? Because Russians are white. That's the only difference. Am I a racist if I say that the Germans are too pacifistic by refusing to comply with NATO's standards of military spending?
NO! Germans are white. I'm critiquing a society, and a culture! Not a race! Imagine that, a distinction!
Some people have a real problem with white people criticizing non-white people, and that's what it boils down to. We should all be consumed with white guilt and never think critically, according to some.
Not that I'm saying that everyone on this board is white, or that 'white' automatically equals "western'. That's the beauty of the West, the plurality of culture, a plurality neither found nor understood in NE Asia.
To reiterate, the notion of an 'inferior' race is pretty ridiculous, whether you're Korean or Canadian. |

I don't think that matters at all. I grew up at the same time and didn't have the same--or even remotely similar--views when I arrived in '94. |

Is this ironic?

At the top of the building is a big neon cross, flanked on either side by spinning "rub-and-tug" barbershop poles. Btw, the neon cross spins too.
I guess you can go and sin, and then walk across the hall and pray for forgiveness. |

Second that.
Got here in '91. Grew up on M*A*S*H. But also payed attention in school and read quite a bit. Pretty much knew what I was getting into.
I guess the most ironic thing that I've experienced in Korea is the number of educated individuals who move half way around the world with out a clue as to what they are getting into. |

I understand the difference between a distinction and flat out racism, I make distinction with my wife on a daily basis.
I am talking specifically about the snide comments that are in fact racist. id say calling Germany a pacifist country for whatever is a little different than caling the entire "society" of Korea "corrupt" "unprioritized" "rude"
I mean you just have to look at this thread to see that many people do not understand distinctions.
If YOU guys post rantings about Korea in a bitch session then you guys are intelligent, observant and part of the club.
If I post rantings about how fed up I am with the people that bitch, and try to comment on topics like this then I am A TROLL.
I do the exact same thing you guys do, I just feel the opposite, so I MUST be a troll.
There is no actual difference bwteen what I do and what you guys do, the only differnce is the content.
Many of you guys think you make a "distinction" when you are really flat out being racist ( cause remember, racism is a feeling of superiority against another race, that's one of the two definitions of racism according to websters dictionary.
I am not saying that YOU do this jkelly, n fact I have a lot of respect for you even though we've tangled a few times, and I don't agree with everything that comes out of your mouth.
But others on here do, and this IS ironic. |

I know what you mean. The same people who complain about Koreans judging all foreigners by the acts of a few seem to be the ones who do the exact opposite. |

i was recently in Gyeongju, and saw a fairly hilariously misguided sign, though i don't know if ironic is the proper term. anyway, at the Gyeongju museum, there is a large time line that starts at "neolithic" and ends at "Republic of Korea, 1948-present" in between are the various historical Korean periods (3 Kingdoms, Unified Shilla, Chosun, et al). the one that didn't quite fit - 1893-1948 was classified as "The Korean Empire." I guess this is sort of like when Andrew Jackson established The Cherokee Empire, or when Hitler established The French Empire in 1940. |
