My partner and I are moving to Korea in January. He already has a job (as an engineer) on a family contract which means I will not be needing accommodation.
1) Any recommendations on a location in Ulsan, neither of us has been before?
2) Can I receive a rent allowance as an alternative to accommodation ?

Question 2: Usually, it will depend on your employer and contract.

As an engineer, where will he be working? This is the question of most importance. I live in Ulsan. Most foreign engineers here work for HHI in Dong-gu.

Ulsan is huge... find out where he's going to be working... And then it'll be much easier to find what you want.

I played in a soccer tournement in Ulsan a few weeks ago and would not reccommend living in that city because it has filthy dirty air. The daily haze over the city also has a pungent industrial odour that must have some nasty consequences for the upper and lower respiritory systems of the human body.

I am looking out my window right now. There is absolutely no haze whatsoever. I can see the mountains. The air is crisp and fresh. There is no odor whatsoever.

My partners company normally provides accommodation allocated by TEPNG and is based on the shipping yard. However they have allowed him to source his own accommodation which would be more convenient for me to travel to work. This is where we are stuck between a rock and a hard place as I have not yet found a job. He is travelling out on the 16th of this month and will have to choose the accommodation by the time I arrive in January.
So I am looking for a central point which will be close to public transport for me (he will have the car, so doesnt mind the distance).

Ulsan's air was never a problem for us. Now we live in Asan, and the air is total crap. Also, Ulsan barely gets any Yellow Dust in the spring.
