Speaking of being fat and losing weight- is there a gym in or around Jincheon-gun? We'll be living there starting next week and I want to lose weight through aerobics (heart problems "run" in my family) or ellipticals, treadmill etc... I literally have big bones but was told by the meanest of buttholes back when I was cute that I carry weight well. But I aint carryin' this much weight too well. Gosh I've become a tub'o lard.... Anyhow, any help or websites or whatever would be appreciated.

if you're a guy I can offer advice guaranteed to work, because I've been thru this crap myself..

if you're a gal it's a little harder, since I can't speak from experience and they function a little differently.

I have the sense any decent sized city in Korea has a bunch of gyms.

Basically, if you're over 25, it's easy to gain weight.

I'm in the opposite spot of the OP-I had an intestinal sickness that required a lot of starchy, high carb foods and discouraged a lot of fiber, so I worked out like a mother's business. I got operated on twice in 2002, worked out a lot in 2003, and now that the negative motivation isn't there, well, I'm not on the couch, but I take it easier to be certain.

This is getting boring, so let's take the thread to a higher level:

Have you ever had sex with a fat person, and if so are you able to recount your experience here amongst your fellow posters?

If you have answered yes to both queries then you should give us the dirt and spill the beans and tell us about it. And don't hold back. We want details.

(I'm not going first. I don't care if you call me @@@@).

I am a gal, 23. I have no physical ailments that cause me to be fat, just love to eat all this great southern Dixieland food, not depressed either. I'm honestly not sure how big Jincheon-Gun is....

I have good news and bad news

the bad news is you most certainly won't find 99% of the Southern /foods that you are used to and love. My understanding of Southern food is that it's very high in calories and they love deep frying things in oil (this is kiss of death!!!!)

the good news is you won't find 99% of the Southern /foods that you are used to and love Smile

this means you should be able to lose some weight by this alone.

otherwise, just be common sense about things, cut back on things you know that are bad for you (I didn't say completely eliminate, but cut back, as drastically as you can, or progressively) and try to walk around as much as possible.. and otherwise be active.

at your age, it should be a little easier than for someone a little older.

My own take on the bashing is that there a people who have failed in their life because they don't know what to do with it. That is why they are in South Korea working a split shift and watching life pass them by. The only thing they have to hold onto is the size of their waist. Pathetic really.

I can't get a decent job back home but at least I'm not fat.

I can't get laid but hey I'm not fat.

I can't paid off my bills but I'm still thin!

Oh well, life won't get any better for them so...

Question Yeah, people in SK who have normal bodies and don't get the whole 'fat thing' must be losers.

Keep telling yourself that. I'm sure that construct will serve you well for years to come.

Tell diabetes and heart disease I said 'hi', okay?

Atramentous, I'd say despite the Korean disapproval, steer clear of rice. Either small amonts or none.

Also, common sense stuff. Avoid anything fried like the plague. Avoid things drowning in sauces (Korean drown everything in sauces). Try to minimize the sauce or wipe it down, etc. Empty calories. Lay off the booze.

do some exercise.

most people in Korea, based on what I've read here lose weight.

I certainly have, but I also don't really eat "Korean" either.

Just a note....if you eat rice (or bread) it is really easy to burn off (of course very easy to process into fat too). Mixing loads of heavy fats in with bread or rice is a real killer. Pizza, while amazing stuff, is a spare tire in a box. Fat and oil is hard for the body to break down and slows down digestion. If you eat rice and bread, limit the amount of pure sugar (another real killer), limit fats and oils and work out. You can survive easily with carbs if you burn them off with exercise, but you may never shake the love handles.

Another thing, if you switch from a high carb diet to a high protein and vegetable diet (perhaps even zero carb, starch, lactose, sugar...which I did) it will take some time for your body to get used to the change. They are harder to digest and you will feel like all you do is go to the can and you feel starved. You will lose a lot of body fat quickly, you will snack more often (on good things), your metabolism will speed up and you will get adjusted to the new diet (at which point your body weight should find a balance where you don't really drop much more). It's actually great, you will feel really happy about eating, like a kid again. Remember this in not a meat diet, it is a vegetable and meat diet....try to keep your meat intake to healthy levels, it is the veg that you need to bulk up on. You can eat as much veg as you want....I mean a lot. I chose not to get rid of cheese, and I also chose to keep a limited amount of milk in my diet. Cheese makes salad taste awesom. I was also allowed s little sugar after meals to give the body a little energy kick for digestion (it is hard work). A little red wine is good to mix in too.

The body is a balance between the energy you need to perform tasks you are doing and the amount of calories put in. Diferent foods also provide different parts of the puzzle. too muc acid is bad, so is too little. Lots of things can be good in small amounts but bad in large amounts, some things like water are almost impossible to OD on (you can actually have water toxicity). It's all about listening to the body...takes time to fine tune the engine.

I think I used to eat to much starch and carbs without enough protein...perhaps leading to me being unable to properly heal my joints after so much hard work...I had the energy to push my self like a demon and enough muscle mass, but after years of abuse I don't think my body was putting enough time into fixing the more difficult areas (joints and cartilage) so it kinda went into.....a severe break down (a gradual lead up of tell tale signs with one really nasty over night explosion), one I may never fully get over. So remember to keep on your protein and pay attention to your body!!

Diet is everything.

Stuff that works for me and a lot of people.

http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Strength-2nd-Mark-Rippetoe/dp/0976805421/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228393306&sr=8-1

This book is the beginner's bible.

Using machines doesn't help you burn fat fast, because you isolate muscles. Using barbells in the squat, deadlift etc. targets *many* muscles and works the nervous system so you'll really go fast.

Also, in Korea you will probably have to lift the barbell off the floor in a power clean because they don't have power racks. Power cleaning is really a fat killer. I can't add weight enough when I power clean a lot.

These excersises are great stuff you can do if you really can't abide barbells, or want assistance excersises. They are "plyometrics". These are "burst" excersises that will help your power clean.

http://www.sport-fitness-advisor.com/plyometricexercises.html
http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/sampleworkouts/a/Plyometrics.htm

Plyo is easy (at least convenient, they can be brutal) because once you're squatting a decent amount, you can just go jump on to benches etc. And believe me you will not be fat once you can do 5 sets of 20 decent box jumps.

On edit: usually the best part of my week is when I set a personal record in a lift, and the best lift is getting a pr in a power clean/front squat (and usually there is a risk of failure at this because my front squat is ahead of power clean, so getting the bar from the floor to my shoulders is hit and miss).

So lifting is not just physically rewarding, but psychologically rewarding. And it really makes my day and is addicting. I'm still really slim (65 kilos), but I still manage to increase the weight from week to week (1 kilo at a time).

I know the process and how to lose it. I just want to know where a gym is because I actually enjoy aerobics and such. There's just no gym close by here in Podunct holler, Alabama. What I NEED is to make myself do aerobics at home if I dont have a gym close. Idea

I'll find somewhere to work out when I get there. Or work out in the apartment when no one's home!!! Twisted Evil

unless you're out in the sticks somewhere finding a gym will probably not be a problem in Korea, though you will probably need help from a local finding one. Ask someone at school to help.
