The explosive growth in the global population could be curbed significantly if teenage girls in the developing world were given the opportunity of completing a secondary school education, says a leading expert in human numbers.
Putting girls in developing countries through secondary school is one of the single most important factors that causes them to have fewer babies in later life, said Joel Cohen, professor of populations at the Rockefeller University in New York. That could cut the expected growth in the human population by as much as three billion by 2050. The present global population is 6.7 billion but would rise to as much as 11.9 billion by then if current trends continue. "Secondary education increases people's capacity and motivation to reduce their own fertility, improve the survival of their children and care for their own and the families' health," Professor Cohen said.
"Education promotes a shift from the quantity of children in favour of the quality of children. This transition reduces the future number of people using environmental resources and enhances the capacity of individuals and societies to cope with environmental change."
The growth in human population will exacerbate environmental degradation as more people compete sometimes fiercely for limited food, water and land. Attempts at limiting growth have concentrated on providing birth control to women, but secondary female education is seen as increasingly important.
The United Nations estimates that the world population will hit 9.1 billion by 2050 and that most of this increase will be in developing countries in Africa and south-east Asia. But this "medium" estimate is based on fertility rates, that is the number of babies each woman has, declining from today's 2.55 children per woman to slightly over two children per woman by 2050.
If each woman has, on average, half a child more than the UN estimates, then by 2050 the world population could be as high as 10.8 billion. If each woman has half a child less, it could be as low as 7.8 billion, Professor Cohen said.
"Thus a difference in fertility of a single child per woman between now and 2050 alters the 2050 estimate by three billion, a difference equal to the entire world population in 1960," he added, writing in the journal Nature.
"Secondary education has the potential to influence that outcome dramatically. Although there are other factors at work, in many developing countries, women who complete secondary school average at least one child fewer per lifetime than women who complete primary school only."
In Niger, for example, women who completed secondary education had on average 4.6 children, a third less than women who completed primary education only.
The same is true of Yemen where women who completed primary education had 4.6 children on average, compared to the average of 3.1 children born to mothers who completed secondary school.

And there is an equally dire problem in Europe and parts of Asia with dwindling population.
Much easier to reduce fertility than to stimulate it again after its dropped due to education and affluence. |

I just had a thought after reading what you said. What if it became POPULAR to use Surrogate mothers? It happens now, but its not mainsteam.
What if affluent couples want children, but the women don't want to give up their career, lifestyle, etc...?
They pay young, uneducated, healthy women to bear their children, whilst paying them a hefty sum. It seems something like this would happen in a country like Japan first, where childbirth is very low. |

Interesting idea, but what about the cultural aspect? Would a Japanese couple want their future offspring to be germinated (spawned? Whatever the word should be) in a brown-skinned person? Would an affluent Korean couple consider that to be an acceptable option? |

India is already doing a roaring trade in surrogacy, with people from richer countries paying Indian women to host their children in their wombs.
And a Japanese couple getting their kid made in India has already been in the headlines: http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/11/02/india.baby/ |

I don't know, but my exam today was about challenging the Constitutionality of a state law forbidding surrogacy contracts. My professor gleefully plaigarized one of Barack Obama's old exams.
I will say that the state has an interest in protecting pre-natal life. |

The wonders of nature (and economics).
There are obviously too many people in this world as it is. If you really wanted to be responsible, you would adopt a kid who is already here and and in need of care rather than launching more puppies from your sacred loins.
Sorry, but it's true. Seemingly every mother is convinced their offspring is God's gift to the world, but I'm sure our planet (if it had a voice) would strongly disagree. |

All male children upon achieving puberty should be made to have a sample of acceptable quantity place in frozen storage for future use with a mandatory vasectomy soon after.
This should be a rite of passage for the modern world. |

Population growth has nothing to do with world problems. It has to do with evil and corrupt societies. |

Hardly groundbreaking news. Most people should be able to tell you that education is the best contraception.
An interesting idea, if not a touch idealist. The fact remains however, that once girls in a large number of third-world countries reach high school age, they are usually deemed (if not already) as being mature enough to either go out and work, or assume matriarchal responsibilities and duties themselves and watch over their siblings/nephews/nieces etc while the mothers head out to work. This is especially so in those isolated villages etc where there isn't an actual school for them to go to. Furthermore, sending your kids to school will usually equate to a loss in income for the family as a whole. It's only natural that families prioritize the filling of empty stomachs over the filling of empty heads.

Well not nothing, the amount of greenhouse gas released is correlated with population as well as wealth of that population. But with more than 11 billion it will have more effect. And as the wealth of that 11 billion increases, so will the greenhouse gases released.
