I was just informed that I will spend the next Monday - Wednesday at an SMOE workshop (paperwork reads Kangseo District of Ed.).
The first two days will focus on Korean culture and co-teaching. I believe on the last day we are taking a field trip to Kyonggi-do (?). My co-teacher didn't seem to know much more than that.
Does anyone know more about this? |

| Must be a local district thing. Ask your district rep. |

Agreed.
Your co-teachers probably don't know anything, nor does your district. These things are thrown together without anyone's knowledge.
Just make sure you finish by regular work time. Or demand overtime pay. |

| I was told this week all Seocho-gu teachers have a meeting at the Seocho-gu office Friday from 4-5p. My handler has to go with me. |

Are you a H.S. teacher? If so, you will be doing some P.D. next week at the Hyundai Learning center.

I teach elementary and my co-teacher says there is no way out of the workshop without a very good reason. She also told me (about 30 min ago) that she wants 15 winter camp lesson plans by Friday afternoon. That is an impossible deadline for me, and I could really use the extra time next week to focus on this stuff. She asked me to work on them at home but she knows I commute 2.5 hrs (to and from) a day. I kind of like what little free time I have in the evenings. I think I made the mistake of canceling dinner plans on Monday, so that I could work on LP's. Now this will be expected all the time? It doesn't even matter, since there is no way I can get that many plans done in two evenings.
I told her that I will most definitely have them completed before we go on break. But she wants LP's, materials, and winter camp decorations done pronto or she says I'm coming in over my assigned vacation time.
Sorry for the rant guys, I'm just so stressed right now. |

you mean your contracted vacation time? tell her no, that vacation time is in the contract and is yours to use as you see fit. she has absolutely no right to ask you to come in then.
as for your lesson plans, don't work on them at home. tell her that you work 8:30-4:30 (or whatever) Monday to Friday, and that is when you'll be completing these lesson plans |

Yes, you should not be working during your 21 days of vacation time. I get a couple more weeks off because my school is closed, but it's technically not my vacation time so my handler told me I should "develop materials" during that time when I am at home. |

Venus Envy, SMOE NSETs have a lot of down time. This is time to be used for lesson plans. NEVER work on things from your home unless YOU want to.
Tell you teacher the simple facts: You don't have enough time to do it by Friday. You will not work on it outside of class. The working hours are clearly defined in your contract. You do have enough time during working hours IF you have appropriate warning. Explain that you'll start working on the lesson plans and give her good plans by Friday, but there won't be 15 of them.
The other option is to make 15 BS lesson plans and say "here you go. They are not good because YOU waited to ask me for them and YOU gave me a 2 day deadline.
Relax, Venus Envy, it's ok to say "NO" to people at your school. Turn it into a professionalism issue. "Do you want bad lesson plans? I don't want to make them. I will make quality lesson plans and give them to you when I'm finished. Don't like it? Ask me sooner. I work 8:30-4:30, not during my free time. Look at the contract." |

She was referring to the contracted vacation days they assigned me.
About two hours after my OP she sat me down and told me what I would teach and how. Now I just have to choose a few activities (which I'm sure she'll change) and get everything on paper. Regardless, it won't be done by tomorrow. I'll work my hardest while on the clock and that is all I can do.
She also called last night (9:30pm) to tell me I had to have an essay complete first thing in the morning. The essay was for this mystery workshop. I whipped it up ten minutes before I left my pad in the morn. When I mentioned I needed to spell check before printing, she told me not to bother.
I am trying my hardest not to stress out, but life here is a bit of an emotional roller coaster. I most certainly need to become more assertive (without feeling guilty) or else I'm never going to last. Perhaps that will be my new year's resolution
Anyway, thanks for all the input guys! |

| I also was told about this workshop, I'm expecting lectures similar to the ones we had during orientation. Why they are making us do this now, I have no idea. |

Don't answer your phone for unknown numbers, or numbers of co-teachers. They know how to send email or text messages if its important.
Stop giving them satisfaction. Remember the magic words: No. Appropriate. Advanced. Notice. Planning. Schedule. No. |

I have a district (Seoung-Dong) meeting coming up on the 10th... Was told about it two days ago... Handler has to go as well... Then yesterday my K-teacher gets an email "Oh, btw, you've been selected to write a 2 page essay on co-teacher. It's due by 4:40pm today..."... I had a bit of downtime and "edited" it (basically re-wrote the entire thing, lol...) for her... Then I get an email today from the district's head NSET stating that I need to come up with a lesson plan and game for 30 people by the day of the meeting so we can "share ideas"...
This would have been helpful back in late September, early October when people were having trouble making lesson plans... But everyone has winter camp on their mind right now and knows how to go about making plans - some just don't have time to get them done (as is the case with the poster a few posts up)...
On the bright side, free dinner... lol - Always have to stay positive |

I said this last summer. We had a workshop 2 weeks before school ended. Over half of the people in attendance were not re-signing with SMOE. |
