I double dog dare you to go collect donations on your street.
A couple of hours tops. Help a family make it through another week of life.
Or are you too occupied with fretting that you don't have the budget for a new plasma TV this Christmas? |

Shutting down spending is not only the smart thing to do individually, it is also the best thing we can do for the economy as a whole. On aggregate, it is good for the economy.
The economy needs to contract. We need to spend less and eliminate the use of credit for consumption. We need to increase savings and investment. The transition is and will be painful, but it is necessary.
The sum of the decisions that are best for each individual, the aggregate in other words, is also the best thing for the economy as a whole. The contrary belief is part of the failed Keynesian Socialist dogma that has helped to create this mess. |

Yes, that is right: a smug leftist elitist.
I concentrate my own volunteer efforts on soliciting, gathering, and transporting donated English-language foreign-affairs books from multiple history departments, professors, and university libraries to an Iraqi university librarian who has asked for help in reconstructing and repopulating this part of his library from us. I judged his request fair and accept the responsibility that each American ought to do what he or she can within his or her own sphere of influence to improve Iraq's situation. Do you hear me patting myself on the back for it or just going about it with quiet efficiency...?

As much as you seem to enjoy putting the usual right wing labels on things, it's not about politics. It's about helping people get through some really tough times right here at home. I'd like to point out that financing Iraq/Afghanistan has contributed to the present crappy economic situation of this country too.
