Anyone know what the standard visa given at universities in Korea is? Is it E-2, or a different one?

Like everything in Korea, it depends.

The Immigration Officer will determine that on the day.

Generally, however, if you have an MA in TESOL, App.Ling. etc., and have a department position, you should be able to get an E-1.

If you don't have one or more of those things, you MAY still get one. Probably not, but it does happen.

If you don't get an E-1, you'll be given an E-2.

You'll be applying for an E-2. E-1's have been discontinued.

Looking at the MOJs website, it doesn't look like E-1 visas have been eliminated. However, they probably are restricted to a specific type of professorship--primarily invited to teach in the sciences. Count on an E-2 visa.

Interesting.

I'm not sure I'd interpret it quite that narrowly, but then again, it is vague!

I should have been more clear. It's not that E-1's have been eliminated altogether, but they're no longer being issued for the standard EFL/ESL-type instructor positions. An applicant must have a title equivalent to or above full-time lecturer, preferably in the science/technology/engineering related fields, as pointed out by lawyertood.

Immigration will ask your future employer "are they teaching English-relate courses?" If your university answers "yes," then you will be applying for an E-2 visa.

I don't know if this info applies to Ph.D holders. I certainly hope not. Korea would be missing out, Ph.D holders holders shouldn't jump through these hoops, nor should Masters holders or uni teachers.

I don't know why, but all the folks at my uni's language institute are on E-1s. We have a variety of degrees (nothing below an M.A. however) and we're all teaching conversation and writing. Even the new people coming in for March will be upgrading their visas.

Well, that would possibly get Korea some international talent which, as we've seen, is NOT something Korea is actually working for.
