My school's exams begin on the 11th... I suspect I'll be teaching on the 8th, 9th, and 10th (to be confirmed) and again the following week on 17th, 18th, and 19th. I honestly don't think I'll end up teaching all of the proposed classes, but I also didn't think I'd have to teach this week and I did have to.

Anyway, I was thinking about talking about the difference of Christmas in Korea and Christmas in Canada, without mentionning Jesus or Christianity and all that tripe.

I was also thinking of showing a video (Mr. Bean's Nativity Scene) / teaching a song that had no religious implications whatsoever.

Does anyone have any ideas? Video ideas... Song ideas?

I was thinking of showing "The Grinch" too but High School students would probably find that lame / not understand the English. My co-teacher suggested a song and to be honest, I've been actively blocking Christmas songs from my memory since I stopped going to church.

Thanks Smile

Yeah I'm doing a class later in December on Christmas. I just going to talk about how and where different aspects of Christmas originated (of course including good ol Santa). Definatly shying away from religous aspects. I'll talk a fair bit about Christmas in Australia as that's where I'm from and its summer during Christmas.

My students are younger, 1`st year middle, but I think all kids like to hear about the differences in our countries.

My students mentioned "Last Christmas" by Wham! You can download the .mp3 file here.

Lyrics here.

Karaoke video here.

I was thinking about doing that song then showing the crazy frog video afterward.

"On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me" might be good. Takes a long time! You could try to find the Muppet version. Pretty cute, even for HS students.

Don't see a problem with the Grinch, either.

I tried the Grinch last year with middle school students and it did not go over that well. They like singing songs better. I was thinking of showing parts of home alone this year.

They like Mr Bean and there is one where he puts the turkey on his head.

The Santa Clause is a good fit, and you can use it to make fun of disgusting obese people.

ajuma, i am doing just what you suggested. i'm canadian, so i'm going to show the Bob and Doug MacKenzie 12 Days of Christmas.

then i'm going to do a powerpoint of Moptop teacher's 5 days of christmas with the "lyrics" so they can sing along with me (all canadian stuff like tim horton's coffee, celine dion songs, hockey tickets, etc.) and learn the style of the song.

then they are going to write their own 5 days of Korean christmas, with food, sports, etc. and they perform. should use up the last 2 weeks!

really wish i could just show a video, though! sigh.

Top 5 the Christmas Version
is always a winner.

Students guess the top 5 in categories and score...use the worksheet with this for keeping track of the score. Click the "Christmas Resources" link on EFL Classroom 2.0.

Cheers,

Looks good, but how do I get it to work exactly? The first time, a big 'X' covered all the answers on each slide. The second time, the categories appeared but only with numbers 1-5, all blank.

Could it be because I am using OpenOffice andnot MS Office?

That might be the problem but best to right click your mouse and then "save as". Save and play as a ppt file - 2003 works best.

I mistakenly posted an old version. Use this Christmas Top 5 instead.

Here is the Top 5 worksheet . Get many more top 5s and full instructions on the community.

I have a variation of pinthe tail on the donkey - put the hat on santa. I just made a felt santa hat and a somewhat big santa from construction paper. Prizes at the end.
