What is the deal?
First, foreigners who I know who love Korea, can speak some Korean, will not go with me for 'Soldier stew'. They are simply too good for it, I guess. Odd when normally they would not critisize any Korean delicacy. In fact, I usually cannot find anyone to go.
When I ask why, the responses are all over the place from foreigner and Korean alike. Some foriegners tell me it is unhealthy, yet I have seen those same foriegners accept a gift of spam on Chuseok. Just today my co-teacher told me it is a bar food, but that is not true. She admitted to me on another occasion that she cooks it at home for her family, and I have seen other families with children eating at the restaurant.
So I am a little frustrated as to why everyone hates my favorite Korean delicacy!?!

I'd like to throw my support fully behind your love of budaejjigae. Yes, the idea of eating hot dog soup is pretty funny when you think about it; it's also pretty damn tastey. I'm a snob about some things, but this is not one of them. |

부대찌개 can be quite good. hell, it's famous up in uijeongbu where i live. i'm not sure why your foreign friends, regardless of their inclination toward korea, would be so down on it. perhaps because of all the spam? accepting a gift of spam doesn't necessarily imply that said spam will be consumed. i have plenty of foreign friends who have been here for quite sometime, also speak the language, and have no problem eating 부대찌개. however, most don't set out to eat it. go figure. |

that's the only reason. |

Yes, delicacy!!
You know the best foods, wherever I go, are the foods that people eat. That is, working class food. Korean food is the food that Korean people eat. I think some Koreans and foreigners just don't get that. I don't want to go to some fancy restaurant at 30,000 won a head, because that to me is not real Korean food. But inevitably that is where everyone wants to go. Oh well. |

부대찌개 is awsome. As was stated above, head up Uijeongbu way and have some in one of the small restaurants. |

If people want to eat a bowl of processed meat in processed meat broth.. then I guess that's their choice. Many folks choose not to eat such dubious faire... It's simply a matter of taste.... and concern for health. As far as I'm concerned, there are far better foods to eat. It's not like we can't afford to eat anything but chemical/salt/preservative laden food... and therefore must eat it to survive. |

I really like it, but I don't eat the fake meat, everything else is delicious though. I usually just eat around it but when I'm with Koreans they make fun of me for "leaving out the best part". |

Budaejigae is great. It's the only Korean dish I can make at
home and have it come out just right. It's better to eat with
friends or loved one on a cold, wintery night. |

There is an entire street dedicated to it. In fact, there is often a line up to get into some of the more popular places. Apparently, according to many Korean friends, wife etc this dish anywhere else in Korea is just not the same. Like many other regional specialities I guess. Not my favourite but it is definatly worth a try. |
