However, if an employer does not recognize the certification letter and requires your diploma instead, ask the college you attended to produce a duly certified copy of your original diploma (or of your duplicate diploma), which you must provide for reproduction. The diploma (or duplicate diploma) is a personal document and should not be given to a third party or to an organization

I copied this from a website that talks about duplicate diplomas. I think after mailing my diploma off a few days ago it scares me that it could get lost in the mail or by the korean school or recruiter.

Why are we being forced to hand over such a personal and important document? I think this is wrong.

Talking of diplomas...

A few months ago I applied for the private teacher license. I filled the forms in at home and my husband took them in to be processed.

He left all my personal documents there including my passport and degree. I was a bit cheesed off by this. He assured me that they will post them back within the next few days. And they did, only minus my degree.

I got my hubby to call and ask where it is. He said that they are going to keep it. I asked him, when will I get it back? They said never. Why?

He called back to find out why.

They said that they will keep it so that you can not make a copy of it and sell it because there are a lot of people doing this at the minute.

I was so annoyed. I made him call back and say it is my degree, I worked hard to get that bit of paper, I didnt find it in a box of corn flakes. (I was also not too happy with my hubby for not sticking up for me!)

After a long conversation, they said to him, can you tell your wife just to print another one off

Print another one off? From where? He said well to be fair, in Korea we can just print another copy off. I told him that in England it doesnt work like that. Now get my degree back!

Again I made him call back.

I received it a couple of days later.

Has this happened to anyone else?

They probably scanned it for their purposes already...good market for that kind of stuff amongst the Koreans. Personally, I've never given my degree to anyone. I let them see it but that was all.

Do they really only print off degrees in Korea. Explains a lot.

But, regardless, if they looked at our degrees does it look like we just printed it out? My degree has signatures, is embossed and has the university's stamp. Unlike Koreans, I don't have a degree making kit at home.
