It is frigid outside... at least it's not raining/ snowing.
Ya'll?? Were you raised in the south or did you just pick it up from someone? I thought I was the only person in Korea to say "ya'll". |

Dam skippy, ya'll bundle up now. Ya hear me? This talk makes me think of this scraggly dirty uneducated inbred guy who is my dumb brothers best friend down in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He stutters, slurs, and got that twang like they do down there. It just seems primitive, backward, and regressive. I haven't met a smart and educated person to talk and think like that.
It's such biting cold that is finding every minute gap to creep through. Talk about speed walking, I'm quite the speed walker today, because it's downright painful out there. |

Tons of educated southerns do talk like that. Nationally, people think they are stupid and uneducated based on voice. The Japanese have a similar sub-culture that talks differently and are seen to be stupid based on accent.
But yeah, most southerns are stupid. |

Really? Where I went to university in the south had the highest concentration of people holding doctoral degrees per population than any other place in the US at that time. It's good to know that people still have that impression of the southern states.
I've travelled all over the U.S. and have to tell you that there are an abundant amount of simpletons all over the place.

I was being sarcastic with the last line. I'm also a southerner. |

The Republican party, the party of "freedom fries", Sarah Palin, creationism, and other inanities controls the South.
that's all one needs to know.
then there's that issue of two or three first names.
but I'm sure there are pockets of enlightenment in the South, especially around uni areas
(btw this comes from an ex-Republican, yours truly)
re weather..
funny, I felt colder this morning on the way to school.
by the time I was coming back from the gym when it was already well dark and much colder, I felt pretty good and much more invigorated (which I guess makes sense after a workout) and it felt like a typical January day in Chicago. |

I'm a Floridian that went to UNC-Chapel Hill and have never been accused of being republican. I'm very happy that both states went blue this time around.

HA! only on Dave's does a topic on weather turn into a conversation of simpletons vs. educated ones. I'm old fashioned and I like to believe that true education means enlightenment and building of one's character. Surprisingly and disappointingly sojourer1 proves that's wrong yet again.
To degrade ones self to petty attacks...that's a shame...y'all...
To show character in public is admirable. To show character in an anonymous online forum is even more admirable.
I was just advise'n folks to stay warm. No harm, no foul. But I'm not bothered in the least by nasty, crude, or even vulgar pointless attacks. Have a g'night. |

where I come from we say it's as cold as a witch's tit outside
yep, the South, in all her glory
but after nearly 2 decades in nyc - discovered it's mostly ignorant northerners who confuse friendliness with intelligence not to mention attitude with education - hence the number of people who adopt attitude thinking it makes them look both educated and intelligent - but when one scratches the surface a bit, one just finds the plastic underneath |

I'm fluent in Mandarin (which shows I ain't no dummy) and say y'all all the time.
(don't tell anyone, but I used to teach the usage to my uni students who got a big delight out of learning a "local word")
Actually, sounding like a native speaker--if your not--often involves picking up little quirks like this. I mean, how many of you have taught "wanna" and "gonna" to your students. How much different is that from "y'all".
Could be worse. In Missouri I "came across" a waitress who asked us "Can I help younst?" I'm not ever sure of the spelling. That was years ago, but I can still remember looking at my father after she had left and asking "what did she say???!!!" |
