I'm sure this will draw sighs from some of you so I apologize in advance.

So, I want game system here in Korea and appears to be more complicated than anticipated. I am a technological illterate and a lot of the threads here are full of terms and concepts I don't understand. It seems to me that console gaming here is more difficult than simply going to EB with money in hand.

My needs are small. I would like a Wii or 360 and I would like to play games in English, from what I've read this appears to be possible.

What is modding? What does this allow? Will it allow me to play English games or merely copied games?

I assume "bricking" is having a system that is a paperweight. How does this happen? How do I avoid it?

If I go to one of the electronics markets in Seoul will it be easy for me to convey my desires? Are my requests common or will I need to do a lot of winking and elbow nudging to get what I want?

Thanks for any replies and sorry if this has been asked a million times, but consider me to be an absolut infant in terms SK console gaming and the info I have been able to find here so far is either too complex or really old.

PS the Yongsan sticky has a post from the OP saying that the information is outdated, so is it still true that most vendors are closed on the first and third sunday of the month?

Unlike regular consoles that are sometimes limited to certain areas (like U.S. PS2s won't play Japanese games), modding is basically getting around so you could play almost anything. Sometimes they rely on actual hardware tinkering (like soldering on computer chips) or it could be software related (getting a specific update).

usually modding will let you play copied games and english games, but you may have to search around for answers. Not only you will have to find a way to mod the gaming console, but if you prefer to play copied games, you will have to have the necessary equipment to copy/burn them (DVD burner, DVDs, etc etc...)

bricking sometimes happens due to a software error? (not sure about this). For example, if I install a custom firmware on my PSP in a wrong way, the system itself will ultimately stop to function, allowing only power on and off. It becomes basically a brick, useless. if your lucky, there might be some remedies to bricking, once again research before action is usually recommended.

You probably could get w/e you want in the electronics store over there. I was once in a position like you with no knowledge, but with a little bit of information you can really do a lot.

You will have no trouble getting modded anything from the vendors. They specialise in it. (no nudging and winking necessary)

I have been to Yongsan on many random Sundays, and never seen any of them closed, so either I've been lucky, or there are enough guys who operate on all Sundays for you to still get what you want.
