Did middle school, high school, and college (U of M) in Michigan, and then left, like everybody else... I went to one of the best high schools in the state, academically speaking, and almost all of my classmates are now in Chicago or in NY or in California, just NOT in Michigan.
I don't feel bitter, although I do sound bitter when I say that Michigan is a state that, for a long time, has not offered its young people a future. Bad political leadership, too many entrenched old-style special interests, brain drain aggravating the situation. Here is a more objective take on this issue:

And I don't miss it. Except for Ann Arbor sometimes. But other than AA and Royal Oak, there are hardly any urban areas in Michigan. Empty, gray, sometimes bucolic too, a good place to retire to, although the summer evenings are marred by mosquitoes. |

Nearly one in three residents, according to a July 2006 Detroit News poll, believe that Michigan is "a dying state." Two in five of the state's residents under 35 said they were seriously considering leaving the state.

Michigan certainly has more than it's fair share of problems right now but it has some very good things going for it...
Natural beauty is probably it's biggest asset... Lakes, rivers, waterfalls, mountains, islands, forests ... It's really a great state for people who like water activities and the outdoors. |

| I was born and raised in Michigan (northern part of the lower peninsula). For the most part, I love the state; however, as I am not much into cold weather or winter sports, I don't mind spending my winters in Korea. The summers are fantastic in my hometown (I don't care for Korean summers). Inbetween the first time I lived in Korea and the second, I taught college in Lansing; contrary to what another poster wrote, I really liked that city. |

| Having spent a year in Lansing, I'd agree. What's not to love. Michigan State University and East Lansing are there. |

You aren't kidding. The worst were the middle of the afternoon folks who would take out a porno and return it within two hours, satisfied customers. I'm all for a healthy sexual appetite, but thank god for the internet. It's easy to look past strangers, but when people become regulars, acquaintances of a sort, and you realize you know all of their unique kinks and predilictions it gets awkward bumping into them about town. Great job though. And great town. I'd kill for some Tios, or Jerusalem Garden, or Earthen Jar, or even a greasy pile of eggs and hash browns from the Fleetwood. |

I'm from SE Michigan and I can't wait to go back. I went to college in Ann Arbor and loved the city. I worked in Detroit for a few years at a law office-- during the day, Detroit is a lively city... at night it's a bit scary depending on which part you're in. There are some good bars though!
I love the middle eastern food, National Coney Island, Meijer... and so on.
Wahh I want to go home! |

I would also kill for Tios or Jerusalem Garden... or Saigon Garden (on Forrest and South U.)

| ANY OTHER CMU graduates? On another thread, we identified BlueLake and Ilsooky (sp?). I was mostly in the TOWERS for a couple years, and then near downtown....I recall quite a few walks down to the DAMS from the Towers going towards downtown. Mostly I remember a lot of keg parties every single weekend, for $3, you can drink as much as you want from a house party all night long! |

| Are we back to being Michiganians or are we still Michiganders? I forgot. I know it switched a couple times while I lived there (kindy-college). |

yeah michigan!
last thursday/friday when i came back, it was snowing.
christmas eve it was raining, then it's supposed to be snow & rain off and on.
people here (just like anywhere else) need to have some more pride in what's around them. there's a lot of things that i'd love to bring over from japan that would probably catch on in the US.
i hope detroit (and the lions) can fix things up.

I'm down for this.

Tios is closing down. The Seaver's decided not to renew their lease because of pressure from the city to buy their lot next to the Cop Shop. Their putting everything into the Myrtle Beach location. By the time I get back next year, the Tiajuana Cheesesteak will be no more.
Nothing like some Hippie Hash, with gyro meat.
Oh man, the Jar...after eating the crap that settles for Indian Food here...I'd take anyone of the places back home be it the Jar or Shalimar or Raja Rani.
Anyone here a Huron or PiHi grad? Huron 2000 here.
Shout outs to the Dirty Glove and the Ace Deuce. |
