Does quality, Korean-made beer exist?

Seriously. Are there any decent Korean micro-brews to be found in Seoul? All I see is Cass, OB, and Hite, which are all pretty much piss. I'd love to be able to enjoy a decent beer without having to pay the premium for an import.

Any ideas??

*sips on a glass of Cass poured fresh out of the plastic 2-liter bottle*

There are quite a few microbreweries around Gangnam station...but you'll have to drink the beer there.

A while ago on this forum there were some guys who were keen home brewers- if you can be bothered with the useless search function you might find 'em. Navy club on base has nice micros.

None available in stores that I know of. Just those 3 brands, Cass, Hite, and OB. My problem with them is excessive chemicals, because they do dry you out excessively and can make your heart beat irregular too. I don't touch this stuff with a 10 foot pole, because it really is unnecessarily bad for our health. The Koreans simply have a vastly different concept of what is good when it comes to food and drink. No to simply knock Korea, they really do have the worlds worst brew. I got without until I can get somewhere that sells a good import beer. I'm waiting for Christmas...

As far as beers straight up made by Koreans: you've got platinum microbrewery located around Seoul. They have amazing brews, really.

Other than that...no. The other microbreweries, Praha, Hofbrauhaus, and Big Rock have canadian and german beermasters.

Also, although no one knows when it'll be available in SK again, there's a North Korean beer called Taedonggang that's absolutely delicious.

There have been accusations of formaldehyde in the beer, or at least a formaldehyde-like smell. Personally, I think that's coming from the fact that they use corn-sugar in wort and probably in bottling too.

Other than that, I do stay far far away from Korean beers because it gives me the shits. No other beer has ever done that to me. I just don't know what the hell they're putting in their beer to even do that. It doesn't make sense.

Imports aren't so pricey. At my current bar they charge 5,000 won for Cafri and 6,000 won for Becks....I drink Becks. For 1,000 won more it's twice the bee draftr.


Of course there is not substitute for cheap draft. No way around it. You want cheap 2,500 won pints of draft...then you must drink Hite or OB.

Or else go to Homeplus and pick up import beer cheap. At 2,000 won a bottle it's not a bad way to go. 2,000 won Becks, Moosehead, Hoegarten, Singtao, San Miguel.....You can even get a mini keg of Heineken.

Yes, let it be noted that South Korea makes some of the worst beer in the world, and leave North Korea out of that. One reason to drink to reunification I guess.

Also, I've dropped a lot of money at the Castle Praha in Hongdae, an amazing location. Big Rock's okay but it always tastes fresher in Alberta. Platinum has one great beer--I think it was the Irish Cream Stout. Also I've been to Oktoberfest downtown which was decent but no competition for the others.

Also, I should strike Hofbrauhaus from that list. Their beer is tasty, but it gives one of the worst head-aches I can think of. And not the day after...instantly.

I'm not claiming it's formaldehyde, but something is definitely unfavorable about the Korean beer, because the next day it's definitely a terrible feeling as compared to a good import beer. The concerning feeling I get the next day or evening is an irregular heartbeat and an uneasy anxious feeling while the import beer has never done that to me after a night of binging. To confirm it's not simply my heart, I've tried getting drunk on the import German beers and then Korean beer to find, it's the Korean beers' unknown bad qualities. I feel just fine as long as I avoid Korean beer, soju, and cheap whisky. I work out 1 1/2 hours each evening at the gym, quite strong and healthy, and having no health issues or strange heart feelings as long as I avoid that Korean drink. This fact now makes me steer clear after learning my lesson a few times that scared me. I believe it's chemicals to create instant fermentation for high productivity with the least energy and brewing facility possible or it's to simply simulate real beer using cheaper materials to produce what very well may not even be real beer. We don't know, becuase how they brew beer is an industry secret and Koreans entrust them to be qualified to only do the best work possible. I know better than to think so narrow minded as that.

I noticed the distinct different of how Korean beer excessively makes you thirstier than any import beer will leading to drinking many more liters of water in attempt to flush it out and get well. There's a chemical in there for sure for which doesn't fool me to believe it's safe and good for me just because millions of Koreans are using it. While I don't preach nor comlain to the Koreans how bad their beer and food really is, they do boast the maekju and soju are good for the common people when you decline their offer to drink with them. I drank the stuff in my 1st year to find something was badly not quite right, but won't ever drink Korean booze again even when it's offered for free and expected of me to drink it. There's no way I could be a business man coming to Korea or China to close a deal as it would require drinking this aweful brew that has me believing (and knowing) it'll kill me.

Ya, nasty smelly shits. Sometimes I even get sick from only a few drinks. Since I stopped drinking Korean beer I feel a lot better. Something is really wrong with beer brewed here.

Hmmmm. the formaldehyde idea is the stuff urban legends are made of. A litre of formaldehyde can cost close to 100usd, while a litre of beer here is around 2 bucks. Doesn't seem like using formaldehyde for anything in the brewing process would be cost effective enough, even if you didn't care about poisoning people.

Still this thread has me thinking. I've had a couple real wicked hangovers here after a night of drinking this watery brew. A half rack of Miwaukee's Beast back home wouldn't give me a hangover at all, but 12 Hite's and I got the splatters and feel like I have the flu all day.

I think more expirimentation is needed, tonight I will explore some imports and/or foriegn labels. There is no way I can get by without some kind of beer.
