Hopefully, he'll realize that kickboxing is not his thing and retire.
Here's the video:

Quote: |
New Zealand slugger Ray Sefo took on Korean behemoth Hong-Man Choi in the first reserve. Choi brought a commanding 35cm/14" height advantage to the ring, but Sefo overcame it in style.
Sefo started with low kicks. When Choi tried to answer in kind, Sefo darted in with a barrage of body blows. Sefo's footwork kept him out of trouble through the first, while his hit-and-run attacks -- including a nice spinning back punch that caught Choi on the chin -- got him out of the round up on all cards. More spinning attacks from Sefo to start the second before a hard low kick that hurt the big Korean. Choi wanted to get the knee up, but Sefo's evasions were sound.
Sefo was clearly well-prepared for the height challenge -- on several occasions he smartly grabbed Choi's leg to deliver a body blow. Choi did little to adjust his tactics in the third, appearing frustrated as he vainly tried to hammer the fists down on his pesky opponent. Sefo was quick enough to avoid Choi's blows and smart enough to plant one or two of his own while retreating. A fine performance by Sefo for the well-deserved unanimous decision. |

I heard that Choi Hong Man had brain surgery a while back.
I saw him fight a few months ago and he looked like he had lost a lot of weight. Maybe it is time to hang up the gloves. |

I saw him fight another little dude..the other guy got in a lucky shot and tore up his side with his toes.
This guy is huge, if he'd get a style he could take all comers. |

there's a fair amount of Hong Man "hate" on dave's and I for one, don't particularly understand it.
I don't have any issues with Hong Man Choi. He seems affable, even likeable. He's a sportsman. Is it his fault his thyroid went whacky on him making him so huge? and a freak of sorts? It's actually caused him a lot of health problems, so why shouldn't he try to cash in on the positive aspect of it?
For his size, his coordination actually isn't half bad. it's hard not to look a little slow and clumsy and when you are a big as he is and are extending not a leg, but something akin to a tree trunk. I'm not sure the human joints are made to handle things that big. I wonder how long his will hold up.
I've never heard him claim to be the best, nor have I had my students claim he's the best. That they recognize him and root for him because he's Korean is perfectly normal.
so... I guess I just don't get the "hate"... |

Did he do his inane dance and song routine when entering the ring this time,
you know, like he did just before he was knocked flat by Mighty Mo? |

Agree with your post. I don't like his rap dance, or being given a victory in seoul when he loses, but don't hate him (don't care for his looks either, i know that's low ).
I think there's a tendency for some fighters and fans to have some reservations about fighters competing basically because they're huge. in other words, if you could size em down they wouldn't be there. bob sapp is a good example. brock lesnar is a recent example but is an exception because he's trained hard before fighting and learned decent skills. hong-man is much more respectful than bob sapp and more humble than both sapp and lesnar.
i think it's quite callous when people jeer him for retiring from a fight after significant time off for BRAIN SURGERY. seems to me that should confer some respect, not ridicule. |

Fair points, the last posters have been making.
I want to make it clear here that I do respect Choi,
and not just 'cos I'd be too scared to face him in a ring.
I certainly don't hate him,
and regret that my post may have been able to be read as a part of that scene,
so, thanks for the prompt to reflect on that.
To look at it another way,
most fighters seem to enter the hall with some kind of performance,
whether it's some music, some costume,
or some extra large swagger in their step.
I don't remember seeing many others who have learned a whole song and dance routine.
You could call it brave, or call it dangerously silly,
either of which sounds quite like that whole fighting thing to start with anyway.
He does look like a nice guy.
He doesn't look much like a natural fighter.
It does make me wonder more about who he actually is in his daily life, before the whole K1 thing. |

It's not Hong-man hate, rather it's hate towards the way Koreans and the Korean media pump this guy up like he's taking over MMA. It's ok to market something and pump it up, but when he loses or wins and we sense the quivers that go throughout the entire nation, or he wins one fight and Koreans, almost univocally, start proclaiming him the greatest fighter in the world (after one fight), it starts to look like foreigners have Hong-man hate.
Your students may not have said so, but so many Koreans I know do. |

In the personality stakes - the big man reminds me of Frank Bruno - and I loved Frank Bruno as a kid even though he lost the really big, important fights of his career against Witherspoon, Lewis and Tyson (twice)
Hong Man Choi comes across as a nice man and he goes in there and tries his best which is all I ask for in any sportsman. Losing to Sefo was bad though as Sefo is on something like an 8 fight losing streak and should also think about retirement but if we remember what Chois background is and thats Korean wrestling - I think he has done well as a K-1 fighter.
As for the final - it went to show once more what a classless individual Badr Hari is - trying to stamp on Bonjansky's head - as talented as Hari is, I hope somebody knocks the *beep* into the middle of next week. |

I don't hate him by any means, but we all know he is only there because he is big. If he was a foot shorter he would get pummeled. I think the hate comes from his support. For example, I had a student do a presentation on K-1, and while this student admitted to not liking Choi and that his favourite fighter was actually Sefo, but he said that everybody must support Choi because he is Korean. So, even though he doesn't like Choi, really likes Sefo, he was cheering for Choi to win because he was Korean. He also went on to say that he was the most famous K-1 fighter. That's where the hate comes from. |

Yeah because you don't see that anywhere else in the world Were you just born? Even if people suck they support the "hometown hero". That is nothing remotely limited to korea. |

completely TRUE.
and so what if his claim to fame or being there is because he's "big".
that is an aspect out of his control (and as noted, he's had severe health complications from his thyroid issue).
there are plenty of people in sports who are merely there because they are "big". (or tall, in case of basketball)
and agreed on Badr Hari. I want to see someone knock his cheap shot punk ass into kingdom come. |

The guy should get the award for the worst fighter of the decade.
Watching him "fight" makes me vomit. |
