Seriously! I was just checking out the exchange rate for Canadian dollars, and a million won gets me $869 and I was swearing about it. Then for fun I check out the USD rate, W......T......F?!?!!?! $692!!!
I feel sorry for you. The whole exchange rate is rapping everyone right now, compared with 4-5 months ago. I've lost 25% of my income every month.
There's not even good booze in this country to put on my Canadian credit card to save money when I buy it.... |

Some of us have money tied up here and can't just collect and leave. At this point it is just a waiting game. Of course it will go back to the way it was, but the question is "when." |

Good points on this thread, including the title. Yeah, we can't just leave with money tied up here. |

The job market is less than desirable and simply getting and holding an $8/hour job is hell these days. It's really a bad situation over there and I'm very thankful I'm not suffering the great pains of underemployment and dire straights now. Plus, this job allows us to do some traveling, save money, and accomplish more overall. |

Plus, why pay for a flight home when the school will pay for it in a few months? Yeah, gotta consider all possibilities. |

at least here i can still have some fun after paying my loans. at home i'd be working 60+ hours a week for similar wages and i'd be stuck at in my parents house. |

Still beats living in the US with mom and dad, and having a shitty job with my BS (Bullshit) degree. Have you seen the American economy these days? Not much better back home. You guys who up and run and go home over the exchange rate being shitty look pretty pathetic. Go to Korea because you want to live somewhere new, have a fun job, make decent money. Don't go home because the exchange rate sucks. So you lose a bit of money, deal with it, everyone these days is. |

What!!!! The exchange rate is bad? No way. I don't believe it, where are getting this information. . . yawn.
My answer to your question as to why American are still here.
When I signed my contract, the exchange rate was not yet slipping. I got here right when it started to dive... should I really just up and leave? Why not just stick it out. I am still making enough money to make a $350 a month loan payment and live comfortably. Its not as good as it was, but why run right when the rate is at its lowest. I'm waiting it out until my contract is over and we'll see where the rate is when I complete my commitment. I'm not just going to run away. There are a million other reasons to stay, which have already been discussed in the other threads exactly like this one. . . hence the above sarcasm. |

Or it could go back up. Who's to say? Or when?
Just the other day it improved W76.92. That's a nice chunk in our favor. |

I suppose it's better to earn money and pay off less of your debt than earn no money and pay off none of your debt. |

Ya I know why people are staying, especially if you're like me and have a BS degree. Go home to what? Nothing...I'd rather stay here. Although there are other countries I'd rather be.
Or you've paid off your debts, like me, and going back to Uni. I need a degree I can do something with....
I just feel bad for Americans right now, the exchange rate is such garbage! |

Not only is the exchange rate garbage, but try getting a job anywhere in USA right now. The market is not very good, let me tell you that. Service enlistment is even on the rise despite 2 wars because the job market is so bad. Where you going to go??
Japan? Good luck getting a job there now unless you already have a visa and are in house.
Middle East? I'll take a bad exchange rate over the sand box.
Taiwan? They're hiring and money is pretty good. It's academy work though for all those out there with nice Uni jobs and public schools.
China? You'll save nothing.
Thailand? You'll save nothing, but at least a beach is near, weather is warm, and culture is friendly.
Mexico? same as Thailand |
