Do you think they'll have Google Street View in Korea?

New Zealand is pretty well covered by google street view, as are the areas around Tokyo in Japan. Korea's got no Google Street View at all. Do you think this is because of security concerns (ie, North Korea) or just because it's going to be a bit late for some reason?

I think it just takes a while to get a project like this done. Also, Google has a fairly low market share here so it might not be high on the priority list for a project like this.

It shouldn't be too hard, what with Korea's cut and paste culture.

See? The Koreans really did build the pyramids. They're right here, along the Cheonggyecheon stream!

It'll never happen.

They'll map about 1/2 of 1 gu, post it online, and the world will start linking to photos of Korean men pissing along the roads and drunks vomiting into storm grates. Within a week, the entire project will be cancelled as the Google people get their visas pulled because the project is deemed "damaging to the good reputation of Korea."

Have you noticed Google Maps don't have street coverage of Seoul or any of Korea. There are satellite views but no streets at all. Google would have to start with all the streets first.

So, it would be a Korean initiative if it got started at all.

Yahoo Korea maps are pretty excellent though, as far as street maps go.

I can't see it happening quickly. Korean Internet is so self-contained. Whenever I use it for anything in the classroom I go to google and all the kids start screaming NaverTeacherNaver! I'm routinely asked through which "portal" I use the Internet. There has been some improvement lately though, many now know what google and youtube are anyway.

I always liked to use the Starbucks store maps:

You can only use it with IE and you need to install some infernal activex program.

No, Koreans have GPS in their cars. They would consider it a security risk to have the detailed layout online, because it would be perceived as a valuable tool for NORKs and Japanese to strategize an attack or invasion. Dokdo is well laid out online though.
