Given the following...
- I am 51 years old and live energetically, but don't care about nightlife, bars or pseudo-available young women
- I want relatively low costs of living
- I want excellent job opportunities (I will have a TEFL International certificate, advanced degrees, non-ESL teaching experience, no other real problems)
- I want students of some age who care about learning
- I DO want either a romantic relationship or shorter things with women 60 or below
... how do you think Seoul would compare with Busan and the others? |

- excellent job opportunities are across the country
- smaller cities and rural areas have a much lower cost of living (basically avoid one of the big-6 subway cities and you'll be able to save plenty)
- if you don't care about bars or nightlife then Seoul and Busan you don't need!
- students who care about learning are more in hagwons than public schools, as classes are small and parents are paying, as for where: indeed Seoul has plenty of the richest and most serious students, those who care the most are not middle schoolers or college kids, I'll tell you that! elementary school aged and high school often. This is less a regional consideration: parents put pressure on their kids throughout Korea (sad, really)
- if you want 40-60 year old ajumma action then i assume you can get that anywhere, but a *shrug* is my honest reaction; go online to the dating sites: koreans are all wired and no matter where you teach you'll be able to hook up
overall, it seems that WHERE you work in terms of city is not so important to your priorities as the SPECIFIC JOB, distance from apartment, class size and frequency, etc.
good luck whatever |

You want a public school job outside of Seoul, Kyungi-do, and Incheon City. With your experience you are in at a higher pay scale, will or ask (demand) a flat, but you will be teaching middle and high school students. If middle and high school students are for you, then a PS job outside of the metro area is for you. |

Have you been to SE Korea Van? Xenophobia and racism are 10 times worse. Gals will literally dash off down the street when approached even if it is only for you to ask directions.
Women you finally get a date from will milk you for all the free English practice they can get and finally tell you they aren't interested in anything beyond that.
If you want to date within the next 10 years, Seoul is the only answer. |

This is BS. Ignore this drivel. People in rural areas and smaller towns are WAY friendlier and 10 times LESS xenophobic because they haven't had the negative experiences dealing with idiotic foreigners. People are a bit more conservative, but if you are looking for a real relationship and not just a hook-up, there are plenty of older, divorced women who are eager to meet a nice guy. |

Exactly. Lots of shopkeepers are nice 40-something divorced women. By lots I'm thinking of about a dozen I know personally and extrapolating from there.
A 55 year old waygook here is getting some action from a blanket store owner, a relationship that started off with private english lessons but quickly that ruse was done away with.
i know two guys in their forties who have turned away eager advances (well, one of them did anyways, the other said he did but I saw him with her together and they looked mighty friendly)
i dated two local women in their thirties, both eager for more than english talk, one i invited to the PIFF film festival and she volunteered immediately to buy the hotel room and got us beds in the same room of a fancy place; another i went boating with and she rubbed her cheek against mine and wanted a second date, so she wasn't exactly standoffish or intimidated (though not my type i decided, so i didn't go on a second date with her).
i know three korean-waygook couples that began with meetings in the smaller cities/rural towns of this province |

Daegu is great, wild horses could not have dragged me away from here but unfortunately my fiance lives in Seoul and won't budge, so next year I have to trudge northwards. Before even if you paid me 4 million+ a month I would not have lived in Seoul. Overcrowded, dirty, expensive, characterless (not to mention the inconvenient location for visiting the rest of Korea).
Oh well, guess i'll have to get used to it... |

I'm in Gyeongsangnamdo, and everyday I wish I was in Seoul.
Mmmmm, progressive thinking, culture, art, life, young people, diversity, variety of food, and civilization how I've missed thee! |

Sigh. I sometimes miss life in the provinces: Jinju's country charm and clean air. But Seoul is great. |
