I like Don on HNIC but as a politician............ Rolling Eyes

I'm sure it wouldn't take him very long to get into trouble. Most likely over an anti-French remark.

Does he have to ask the Queen for permission to appoint the Senators?

Well you know, when the Goods And Services Tax was being passed by the Conservative government in the early 90s, the Liberals had a majority in the unelected Senate. Since the opinion polls showed that the tax was unpopular, the Liberals figured they could get away with using their senate majority to block it. As I recall, the government actually did have to send a representative to London to ask for permission to add a few more seats to the Senate(for some reason, this could not be done through the Governor-General; they actually had to go to London).

However, it should be pointed out that, in giving the go-ahead for the extra seats, the Queen was simply siding with the demands of the democratically elected house against those of the undemocratic one. It is highly debatable whether or not the Senate should have been blocking the legislation in the first place, since no one really regards that as their role anymore. And in any event the Conservatives had openly campaigned on a platform that included the GST in the previous election.

Don Cherry will give the Ottawa senators a tonguelashing then praise the Leafs and be told to sit down and he won't and some legislative aid will have to whisper that they've gone to commercial break then he'll grunt and let senate business proceed.

At least it's not Bob Cole. Rolling Eyes
