Hi folks,
I use the bank IBK, but I don't read enough Korean to navigate the atm. You need a bank card to access the English feature, and I only have a passbook. I can't get a card for 3 months. Can anyone who uses IBK give me the idiot's guide to taking out money from their machines? Or even just words like withdraw, cash, etc in Korean so that I can stop bugging the one guy at my branch that speaks English?
Thanks! |

A good rule of the thumb for all the Korean ATMS is that the top left choice is always for withdrawals...
I bank with IBK and they always have the English option, so maybe your particular ATM machine is really old school. Why don't you test out some other ATMs nearby, but then you'll have to pay 1000-1200 won fee every time you bank. |

santafly - The guy said that because I'm a foreigner they couldn't get me a card for 3 months... he tried to put the request through but it was denied.
el_magico - Thanks! My director walked me through it once, which means I didn't actually learn anything - he pushed buttons and I told him how much money I wanted out of it. I remember there were quite a few steps, like putting in your 4-digit number, your 6-digit number, and it asks if you want cash or cheques. Any further insight? A 'push this button, then that button to get x amount of cash' would be amazing and I'd love you forever. As for old-school atms though, this is in the little atm add-on part of my branch, and they're all the same... |

Can't get a card for 3 months? Bull. I got an IBK card as soon as I opened an account with them. I can use it at ATMs and also in stores as a debit card.
Visit a different branch and demand a bank card. |

I've been with IBK since the kids on the street were calling them Fine Bank.
You should be able to get an ATM card. I received one right away and it was a 'Check' card (I can debit and buy things online). I even scored an international ATM card just by asking a few months later. My suggestion would be to go to the bank and tell the person "ATM card-uh upseyo". You will need to talk to one of the people at the desks, but ask the security guard/greeter or a teller to help you. In my experience at IBK they fall over themselves to help you. If there is any confusion just point at an ATM and repeat "Card-uh upseyo!". If you don't know, upseyo means "don't have".
I have lost my card countless times and this is how I go about getting a new one. Usually those desk people speak some English and the only part you really have to understand is when you enter your PIN.
I'm guessing you're new to Korea. Sometimes people here will tell you things are 'impossible' if they don't/can't do them. Just go to the next guy.
Hope this helps. |

There shouldn't be many steps... Speaking from memory
- insert card
- Enter 4 digit pin, 6 digit pin is used for transferring money to other bank accts
- Top left choice
- select the amount of cash
- if you withdraw more than 100,000 then it gives you option for cash/cheques... I'm about 70% sure that the bottom one is for cash |
