So I just tried to sign up for nateon and as usual they wanted my waygookin card number and a sample of my blood to sign up. I asked my coteachers to help and they tried signing me up but it still wasnt working.
They called the company and said my card date wasnt matching up and that they needed to go to immigration in order for me to get an account!!!

Seriously what is it with the anti-foreign sentiment in this country.... Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Just remember these things are ad supported. The ads are primarily directed at Koreans who can read Korean and want things Koreans are interested in. White people are a very, very small market here in Korea. We ultimately consume system resources and don't much contribute to the demographics advertisers are trying to reach.

Judging by the number of hoops that Koreans have to go through, I'd say they just want to make sure that everyone who registers on the site is very easy to control. This is the Korean Internet after all, where the only freedom you have is access to personal information about everyone else on your website.

In this case, it might not be the evil foreigner syndrome. I know a few foreigners who signed up for Nate On. I use it myself, and never had any trouble - I was signed up over 2 years ago with the help of a Korean friend, no hassle, no fuss.

Do you have a Cyworld account? It might be easier if you have one of those first. That has to be set up over the phone I think (so need a Korean) but after that, it's easy to get a Nate On linked to your Cyworld page.

If you work in a public school, they have blocked most of the common messenger programs like MSN, Yahoo, ICQ and NateOn. Fortunately there are ways around this, although I wish I knew a way to access NateOn while at school.

And they also have yet to block one that isn't too common on the Korean radar, but is well known elsewhere.

Not true. My school didn't block anything for my office LAN connection.

Interesting. Maybe it's just region specific. Are they also not blocked on your CT's computer too?

I have worked at several public schools, none of them blocked any chat programs.

Last year I signed up with NateOn no problem. I don't recall any special foreigner hoops. The thing that always gets me, though, and what I always forget to do at first is enter my name exactly as it appears on my ARC. So LAST FIRST MIDDLE rather than First Middle Last.
