and now you can too. I have cracked the code. After reading this post, you will be able to watch Korean comedy programs and talk shows and laugh along with the natives. You will be an expert. Don't worry, there are only 4 jokes in Korean humor...you'll master this lesson in no time.

1. Somebody dancing.
The thing that is so funny about this, is that someone is dancing. To music. It's hillarious. Always guaranteed to get a laugh.

2. Young child dancing.
This joke works because it's a little kid who is dancing. Little kids can't dance properly! This is very popular, because it's funny and cute at the same time...a bit more complicated than the first joke, but with practice you will be able to recognize and appreciate this joke as well.

3. Old person dancing.
This joke is similar to joke number 2, in that it is funny due to the surprising nature of it. Who would expect an older man or woman to properly execute a popular/current dance?

4. Fat person dancing.
By far and away the biggest crowd pleaser of the bunch. Simply the apex of Korean humor. If the Chris Farley Chippendales sketch from Saturday Night Live aired here, this country would probably implode. There would be anarchy. Due to mirth.

I know what you are saying: Are there only 4 jokes in Korea? Well, yes. Yes, there are. Occasionally when you watch these shows there are people shouting at each other, not dancing. They are just resting in between dancing...dancing takes alot of energy...they will get back to dancing soon enough. Rest assured, although my Korean isn't perfect, they are generally shouting about dancing. That's why everyone is laughing.

Enjoy!

Oh RJ. You've only scratched the surface. Where does the "man dressed as a woman" joke fit into your scheme?

Right between the "man dressed as boy with white smear below his nose" and "TV personality gets hit in the head with a metal tray" jokes.

I'm curious if ANYONE here has ever tried this with their students (middle or highschool)

especially BOYS.

anyone ever show them the Three Stooges?

yes its REALLY REALLY old but they basically do to each other what my boys constantly do to each other all day and at least half of my classes.

I still don't understand most of them, but sometimes when they use ban mal and simple words I can follow a whole skit. I find myself just as bored as when I can't understand what's going on at all.

The game shows certainly are time wasters. Apparently it's all designed to relieve tension ...
... not a relief for the people stuck in their living rooms though, it's only good for the rich kids prancing around in tropical hot spots and in massive studios.

I thought the punchline was 'No, pies are round', followed by a shaving foam 'pie' to the face and ensuing hilarity.

The way I heard the joke, it went something like this:

A hillbilly boy was the first in his family to go to college. He was visiting back home when his dad asked him, "So, say something edumacated." The boy blurted out, "Pi r squared". His dad slapped him up the side of his head. "Dagnabit, boy! What have I been wasting my money on? Every'n knows pie're round--cornbread r squared!"
