Should I take a wod of cash with me or put more substantial amounts into travelers checks? Or is there an easier way to bring your money?

Depending on where you are going and how much you are taking, just pack a few Ben Franklins into your pants.

T/Cs that are bought in Korea (regardless of the currency they are denominated in) are about 1 step above useless and you WILL get a WORSE rate when you try to exchange them (not to mention the hassle you will get looking for a bank or money changer to take them).

US$, in $100 denominations work best anywhere outside of Europe and will get you the best rates when you change them to the local currency.

If you want T/C's always get American Express T/C's. For some reason many places don't want to take other T/C's.
Nonghyup offers them.

Ttompatz is right. Just make sure your Franklin notes are perfect and fairly new. US$ currency is useless if it's spindled, worn, damaged, or has a tiny rip. Be careful to not get it wet! I used a waterproof pouch to hide in a money belt.

I'll buy half in currency and half in T/C's and carry 2 debit cards and 2 wallets. One hidden in carry on backpack and one for my front pocket to hold spending cash. If robbed, they only most likely get the one in your pocket that doesn't include your cards, T/C's, and all your money, but only $100 to $200 cash or less. You can even pack an old drivers license and cards you can lose in the pocket wallet to make it look like the only wallet you have.

I bought travellers' checks in Korea in US denominations and they were accepted in other countries. The exchange rate isn't great right now but it has slowly been improving over the last few days.
