I'm a Canadian who will be traveling home soon with a stopover in the US. I renewed my passport in Korea, and thus it's non-machine readable.

Is there anything I have to do before my trip, or am I good to go?

You'll be ok as long as your PP is valid.

I am a US citizen and my passport is not the new type.... and they still let me come home every now and then.

You may be detained in a clear box room and treated like a criminal who is guilty until proven innocent while they verify the document is valid and you are not on any terrorist lists. American airports, TSA, and dept. of Homeland Security suck big wankers. They just act plum ridiculously retarded to put it bluntly. Expect to have to tolerate a bunch of retarded BS to pass go.

in all fairness, it depends on his home country. If he's west European or Australian/NZ, he'll be OK. If he's Asian, African, South American, eastern European, Arabic, he may be sent to the 'penalty box'.

The US is an a-hole these days when it comes to letting people in from non western European countries. This has affected me and my wife. BUT, it's ok as far as I'm concerned. for security. And, I'm not a conservative nazi. I'm actually very liberal. And, I'm a realist.

Canadians are NOT part of the visa waiver program (they are visa exempt) and as such are NOT required to have machine readable passports nor do they need advance permission to travel from the ESTA ( https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/esta.html ).

The U.S. Visa Waiver Program requires visitors from various countries to have Machine Readable Passports to enter the U.S. Canadian citizens are exempt from this program. This requirement does not apply to Canadians even if the passport is issued abroad.
