I think this will not be beaten this year in terms of sheer cheek. If anyone can show me something worse, I'll be amazed:

1.8m before tax
20 hours a week
MA required + 1 year experience
4 weeks vacation

-Duties: Prepare lesson plan, teach English language class, assign and correct homwork, testing And, teaching contnuing education center programs.

That's a doozy(sp?).

With the economy getting worse, it seems that there's some denial going on.

The sad thing is, they'll line up at least five interviewees who actually WANT this job.

For the EGO benefits: "I work in a university."

The world churns out untold thousands of M.A.s a year and many are eager to call themselves "professor" even though they'll never get a PhD and become a true professor.

As a general rule: The higher a status job, the bigger the phoney.

That sounds like a hagwon job and not a university job.

No, a hogwan would pay much more for a Master's degree. The teaching hours would be around 30, but the outside work would be much, much less.

Well, if someone wants to live in rural Korea and has an interest in...

Nevermind. There's no way to reconcile such bad benefits with such a terrible job. And they want an MA with experience?

I got off the bus by mistake in Gaya once. Maybe I had to change buses, I can't remember, but I've been through there enough times to know it is a right royal sh i t hole.

My professor doesn't have a PhD, he's recognised as a world leader in his field, flown around the globe to speak, and his work is published by MAJOR publishing houses. He even advises PhD candidates.
You don't need a PhD to be a proper professor. But, I do agree that ESL instructors in non-English medium universities are not professors in the academic sense of the word.

"Priate"

Was that supposed to be 'private' or 'pirate'?

I know some people who worked for Gaya University. They said it was a horrible job, with lots of extra hours and hardly any vacation.
Very few universities seem interested in real competition. Most assume that even low wages and few benefits will attract the hogwon crowd.
There is no prestige in being low-paid.

Then I think they're smoking something a bit funny because with a master's degree, I actually am teaching at a hagwon, and they're paying me a decent amount of money for doing it. If it wasn't for that money, there's no way in the world I would be here. A couple of times I thought of just taking a university job for the prestige, but then the money always becomes the issue.

Hagwons may suck, but if you have the credentials, it is possible to find one that pays decently as a result. I can't see in a million years how they'd be attracting ANYONE even with a master's in underwater basketweaving.

They have two campuses. The other is in some rural county south and east of Daegu. I had an interview once with them, some 10 years ago. When they got around to the pay, (then 1.4), I ran away...
