|
|
HI
I was thinking of applying to English Channel for work teaching 1-2-1 adults.
they sent me the following conditions to look over:
Base salary
The Base Salary is 2,000,000 won per month. This is the absolute minimum pay a Language Trainer can receive in one month. The Base Booking Rate is 65 percent, which means that the Language Trainer receives the Base Salary of 2,000,000 won a month when he/she conducts an average of less than 5.2 hours of tutorials per day. (65% of eight hours is 5.2 hours.)
Bonus and overtime
In most months the Language Trainer will receive a bonus in accordance with the Language Trainer's Booking Rate. (50,000 won extra for every five percent above 65 %.) If the Language Trainer conducts an average of six hours of tutorials per day (a Booking Rate of 75 %), the pay will be 2,150,000 won per month. Vacation days are not paid, but the Language Trainer is paid 18,000 won per hour for substituting (outside the regular eight-hour workday) when a coworker is on vacation. Payday is the 10th of every month.
Saturday work optional
Language Trainers who want to earn extra money have the option of working two or four Saturdays a month. The pay rate for Saturdays is 150,000 won per day. The schedule on Saturdays is always from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm. Most Language Trainers opt to work two Saturdays a month, but this is up to the individual.
Earn extra money
Note that a Language Trainer who opted to work four Saturdays a month (600,000 won extra) and had a Booking Rate of 80 percent (200,000 won extra) would make 2,800,000 won a month along with the free housing. That's a lot of work, but it's also a lot of money in the bank!
Holidays
In addition to Korean national holidays, there are ten days of unpaid vacation per year. The Language Trainer is allowed to take five of these vacation days at a time (often combined with a Korean national holiday and a weekend or two in order to make a longer vacation.) The Language Trainer must apply for vacations 45 days in advance.
What do people think???? I don't really like how they don't pay for holidays. But if u work Saturdays you can make up to 2.8m a month it says. |

Far and away the worst contract I've seen posted here. Too many if conditions and, of course, not paying for holidays is just cheating the teacher. They want to treat you like an "independent contractor" who is merely on call to them. You aren't and that's bogus. |

obviously the OP has not bothered to search for any of the threads on English Channel, universally derided by all. |

I hear English Channel will not be around by February 2009 perhaps earlier due to slowing sales. |

do not post unfounded rumors
you'd think a branch or two would have closed before then if it was going to happen.. you just don't up and close ALL the branches in 2 months.. surely a couple of them have students at least
sounds like whoever you're talking to has an axe to grind.. |

Op, you got to be kidding. I wouldn't take that job even if hell freezes over. Only 10 unpaid holidays a year. Make 2,100,000 per month by teaching 6 hours a day. And work every Saturday too for only 700,000 won before deductions. And be paid on the 10th! And then you probably have to put up with a lot of crap. That's absurd conditions.
In PS, you can make 2,200,000 per month (with 1 year teaching experience or masters) and then if you take on after school classes at 30k per hour for 1 hour each day, you make 2,800,000 with your Saturdays off as well as having paid holidays and 5 to 7 weeks paid vacation a year. The 2,800,000 per month doesn't count the extra you might be paid for Summer and Winter camps nor does it count the transportation allowance of 20,000 per day away from your main school.
OP, my advice is to keep looking for a job if you want some quality of life, but if you want to tune in to the English channel full time to get your tube burned out, then knock yourself out by all means. |

The search function is not working well right now on Dave's (no surprise there), but here is one thread I found via Google:
http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=135944
Maybe when the search function comes back, you can take a look at what has been said in the past. |

That's public school under the EPIK program. Yes, they're hiring for late February starts, yes they pay 1,200,000 won for one way airfare to Korea, secure and pay for apartment, and then 1,200,000 won for airfare home or 2 million won for RT airfare to enjoy 2 bonus vacation weeks if resigning for another year. The new 2009 contracts pay relocation allowance instead of paying for airfare which is good if you pay less than the amount, not flying for the 2 weeks bonus resigning vacation, or wishing to do a RTW trip at the end of your contract. It would be bad if airfares doubled or tripled in price though. |

Nope, everyone knows that to work there is a fool's decision.
BUT to say they're going out of business is ridiculous. I can understand maybe closing a few unprofitable branches, but for a chain just to go completely under in a month is not something I can see happening.
Just because teachers are extremely unhappy with having to work there (and apparently getting shafted quite often on the last paycheck - they pay you AFTER you leave Korea) doesn't mean that students are unhappy and leaving
teachers are an unlimited resource and the school is probably better off when they leave early and don't get severance or air fare |

100% illegal. Besides the fact they should be paid, you should be getting 15 days, not 10.
And 150,000 for an 8-hours SATURDAY shift? Pfft. At least give me a percentage of each student's tuition money to make it worthwhile; 40-50% is standard. |

This represents English Channel's opinion of its teachers. |
