Well, I sat on my hands and forgot to buy these ultra-cheap Siem Reap Airlines tickets from HCMC to SR for $50 each way and now am left with the last remaining option of taking a 12-hour bus. Anyone ever made this journey? Any insights and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

No problem. Early morning bus from Pham Ngu Lao in Saigon, six hours, or even less now that the Japanese have finished improving the road. Take a day or two in PP, then another six hours to Angkor Wat. Return via Battambang etc.

When we did that trip the bus times lined up in such a way that there was no way to go directly from HCMC to Siem Riep and we had to stay in Phnom Penh for a night in both directions. This was only a problem for us as we were on a very tight time schedule and didn't have as much time in Siem Riep as we'd have liked.

It's a long trip...but as always the bus is more interesting than taking an airplane.

I talked to a travel agent in HCMC and she said that you can take a direct mini-bus (6AM-6PM) to Siem Reap. I really have no desire to see PP although the Killing Fields may be worth a look.

I really hope the Japanese have made a lot of improvements to that road. 12 hours on a Cambodian road sounds like sheer torture if you ask me. Although the worst road is from Siem Reap to the Thai border. Avoid that stretch if you can at all costs.

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

been there done that

got some great photos tho of when we had to pull over due to a herd of cattle being driven across the road - w/the open pastures and setting sun it looked right out of the Southwestern U.S. Laughing

I'd post but no more pix, alas.
