Hi was wondering what the going rate for an english teacher is now. I've heard if I want to renew I should ask for atleast 2.5 or 2.6 thoughts? |

Shoot for 2.5.
But, if they paid you 2.1 last year, they won't go up to 2.5 or even 2.3 for a re-sign.
Best bet is to move on if they won't give you what you want.
If you are a decent teacher, you can find a school desperate for a FT that will pay 2.5-3. The schools are out there. You have to work to find them though....and no recruiter is going to give em to ya....

I think it's reasonable to ask for at least 100,000-200,000 Won for a raise.
My second year in Korea I made 2.1 and I knew I was getting underpaid. So I asked for 2.3 when I re-signed and I got it.
They were kind of maxed out at that number though, so I moved on the next year and now I'm making 2.6 for very reasonable hours plus lots of opportunities for extra work that pays very well.
So if they won't give you what you think you're worth, it's definitely worth your while to move on. |
