I'm looking to get a new system, and since I've been pretty pblivious to PC advances over the last 6~8 years, I need some pretty serious advice.
I won't be doing any heavy-lifting, so to speak - no video/graphic editing, but I would like to get into some modest gaming; first-person action, racing games, along those lines. I've been doing some preliminary research which has turned up a lot of questions:
CPU
Intel or AMD? Is a Core2 Duo running at, say, 3.1 any "better" than a QuadCore running at 2.2?
MOTHERBOARD
Here's something which I know absolutely nothing about.
VIDEO CARD
PCIe or AGP? ATI or NVidia? I would like to the card to have a cable-TV in and be able to handle HD-DVD.
RAM
DDR-2 or -3? How much is enough to handle the kind of framerates I'll be using without lagging? How much to handle Vista turned up to the max?
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
What have I missed? Umm, budget - I'd like to keep it all under $1500 Cdn if possible (I'm in Canada now, btw, but I know there's a few guys here who really know their stuff.) |

Everyone needs a motherboard to build a computer. It is the bread and butter where you can start to build whatever you want. There are many different types of sizes of mobos (some very small, a lot standard sized) and different mobos come with different features (like some come with 2 PCIe slots for graphics cards).
Not sure about the CPU since I got a core 2 duo. Definitely beats the old P4 even though the P4 has a higher speed. AMD should be cheaper, but Intel offers better speeds?
Since you are going to get into gaming, I cannot highly stress enough that the graphics card is going to vital to your build. So if you are going to skimp over other products (like sound, and memory) don't skimp on the video card!!!
If you got a good card, DDR-2 should be okay. Other recommendations should be a good mouse (don't buy that microsoft optical $9.99 crap), keyboard (incase you need to press more than keys at once), headphones/speaker set (sound is also important to a game too!) This is pretty much basic advice, but if you want more details, other posters should know a thing or two. |

You can get a great PC for under 800,000 at Sun-in Plaza, Yongsan.
I would recommend....
E8400 CPU
Any P35 motherboard
4GB of 800mhz RAM
ATI HD4850 graphics card
Western Digital 640GB hard drive.
Vista Ultimate in English from those nice people on the internet......
You could get a PC with those specs for 800,000 in Sunin Plaza.
A nice big 24'' monitor will be the biggest cost....around 400,000......but well worth when you fire up a 1080p movie..... |

Unfortunately, gaming will require the highest PC specs. Things you will need to put down on is graphics card.
CPU: Intel, quad core is better than dual - but dual is just fine, no need to put down much cash for a quad at this point.
Graphics: Nvidia PCI-E (AGP is dead)
OS: Running Vista for a gaming machine is not recommended because there are still a lot of driver issues, Direct X, etc, conflicts. XP2 SP3 is what i'd recommend, you can always get the GUI pack so that it LOOKS like Vista but it's running XP.
RAM: Get 4 GB DDR RAM, paired, 2 sticks of 1 GB if you can.
Motherboard: just make sure it has PCI-e slots, and DIMM slots for DDRAM of anything from 4-8GB. Get a motherboard that works well with your Nvidia card if possible.
Monitor: Get a good 22" LCD with a response of 2ms or less. |

Get a zalman 600w PSU...also, I suggest a HD4850 graphics card or an older 3870 if ur looking to save money. I don't recommend Nvidia as their drivers are crap. 4g's ram in 2 g paired sticks. vista ultimate x64 free on torrents. |

I believe Foxcomm (Foxconn?) has a new motherboard that instant-boots in less than 3 seconds. What it actually does is shuts down, then reboots silently immediately after the shutdown, then kicks itself in a sort of standby mode all its own. So when you go to turn on the computer, the boot process is already done, and it's ready to go.
You should look into that.
